Eh, roads ...

Almost the entire remote part of Russia was 150-200 years ago as an impassable road. In those years, there was an ironic phrase about bad roads - one of the two eternal troubles of a huge country. The author of the immortal statement could be Pushkin, but more often authorship is attributed to Gogol. Pushkin believed: in 500 years "... roads, it is true, we will change immensely: the highway here and here, connecting, cross ...". The implementation of this plan took less time than predicted by the poet. For example, south of the mouth of the Volkhov River are two major federal highways of international importance: Vologda - Novaya Ladoga (route A114) and Kola (M18).

One of the most important elements of the transport system in Russia

Route A114 continues the international transport corridor from Northern Europe to the Asian part of the mainland (Western China). The motorway is laid along the territory of two regions of the Russian Federation - Vologda and Leningrad, connecting the cities of Vologda, Sheksna, Tikhvin, Novaya Ladoga (Leningrad region) and other settlements. International, federal and regional importance of the road:

  • Shortens the route from Finland, St. Petersburg to Arkhangelsk, Vologda, Yaroslavl, Kirov, Perm;
  • Is a part of the road corridor between the north-west and the Urals;
  • Connects the transport network of the northeast of the Russian Federation with the Leningrad region, St. Petersburg;
  • Gives an opportunity to enter the Murmansk and Arkhangelsk regions, Karelia;
  • Connects Vologda and Cherepovets, other settlements within the region.

Features of the route

The first few tens of kilometers of the motorway from Vologda received the status of "first category road". In each direction - two lanes, traffic flows for the sake of traffic safety are separated by a metal fence. There are two-level interchanges, which replaced the dangerous intersections. The width of the road covered with asphalt concrete in the main sections is 7-8 m.

The length of the motorway from Vologda to Novaya Ladoga (Leningrad region) is 531 km. This distance can be overcome in 8 hours 55 minutes. The densest traffic of the main types of motor transport is present on the section between Cherepovets and Vologda. Drivers who go on the road along the A114 route, it is necessary to know that the complex stretches are located near the village of Leontievo and in the area of the Tikhvin circuit road.

Modernization of the A114 motorway

The high economic and tourist potential of the Southern Ladoga region, the Vologda region and numerous attractions attract people to these regions. The number of passenger cars passing through the federal highway Vologda-Novaya Ladoga, annually increases by about 15%. The motorway is undergoing reconstruction and modernization, aimed at ensuring traffic safety and improving roadside infrastructure. Until May 2017, builders are planning to increase the number:

  • Road lanes, additional interchanges, culverts;
  • Sidewalks and pedestrian crossings;
  • Lighting devices;
  • Road signs;
  • Parking for private vehicles, stops where passengers can take buses "Novaya Ladoga - Volkhov", other route transport.

A small part of the route is already equipped with "elektropastuhami" - devices to repel moose. Instruments operate from solar panels and serve an electric charge on metal wires. Tension does not pose a threat to the lives of people and animals, but frightens off the latter when trying to get on the road. In the future, the number of "elektropastuhov" will increase on those sections of the route of Novaya Ladoga, where the migratory routes of large wild animals pass.
