Suvorin Alexey Sergeevich: biography, activities and interesting facts

Today we will talk about the biography and activities of Alexei Suvorin - a famous journalist, writer, publisher, as well as a dramatist and theater critic. His life was full of bright and interesting events. So, let's begin our acquaintance.

Childhood

Suvorin Alexey Sergeevich was born in 1834, in the autumn, in a small village of Korshev (now the Voronezh region of the Russian Federation). The boy's father was a state peasant in the village. He was injured in the Battle of Borodino, and afterwards - an officer's rank. Later became a captain, and this meant that the whole family received a lifelong hereditary nobility. At the age of 49 I got married again, because I was a widower. The chosen one was the 20-year-old daughter of the priest Alexander. In the marriage, the couple had 9 children, of which Alex was the oldest.

In 1851, Alexei graduated from the Mikhailovsky Cadet Corps in Voronezh. He became a sapper and resigned after a while. After that, he devoted himself to teaching in Voronezh and Bobrov. At that time he became friends with the writer Nikitin.

Youth

In a well-known magazine, he posted a story about a typical rural life called Garibaldi. He became very famous, as on many creative evenings he was read by the famous actor Sadovsky. Since 1858, Suvorin Alexey Sergeevich began to post his own articles in journals. Wrote under the invented name Vasily Markov. A little later, Countess E. V. Salias de Tournemir invited Suvorin to move to Moscow for a while, in order to take part in the "Russian Speech". When it ceased, Suvorin took up a new business for himself - writing books for people's reading. This he did at the request of the Society for the Distribution of Useful Books in Moscow. Among his works should be noted "The History of the Time of Troubles", "Boyarina Matveyeva", the story "Soldier and Soldier", "Alenka".

Life in St. Petersburg

Alexei Suvorin, whose biography took an increasingly interesting turn, moved to St. Petersburg in 1863. He wrote in the magazine "Russian disabled" under the pseudonym A. Bobrovsky. He published his short stories, which he later published in the book "Everyone: essays of modern life." Because of some particularly freethinking chapters in 1866, government officials filed a criminal case against the young man. The book was burned, Alexei Suvorin was sentenced to 2 months in prison, but later his punishment was changed: he received 2 weeks of work at the guardhouse.

Stranger

The greatest fame as a writer was when he wrote under the pseudonym of the Stranger in the late 1860s. He wrote in the magazine "St. Petersburg Vedomosti." It was in the genre of the feuilleton that Suvorin's talent was most clearly revealed. He skillfully combined sincerity and subtle wit. The highlight of his work was that he was able to find an approach to every person. Even criticizing, he did not touch the person. He managed to modify the traditional morning feuilleton - in it he was the first to discuss various significant events taking place in the literary, political and public life of the city.

It is worth noting that journalist Alexei Suvorin was not from the timid ten. He did not hesitate to openly criticize many figures. His attacks were tolerated by Katkov, Prince Meshchersky, Skaryatin and others. At the same time, Alexei touched only the social aspects of people's activities. As for political views, here Suvorin was a moderate liberal Westernist. His judgments were based on the principles of tolerance, broad political freedoms and protest against narrow nationalism.

The inimitable success of the Stranger's feuilletons made Suvorin the main object of hatred in certain circles. By the way, in 1874 the editorial office of V. Korsha was withdrawn from the "St. Petersburg Gazette". The main reason for this was the satire of Alexei.

The public realized what kind of person lost, only when Suvorin released two new books in 1875. They were immediately sold out, although the events described were no longer so urgent.

A new round of career

In the same year, Alexei began to write in the "Stock Exchange". A year later he bought the newspaper Novoye Vremya together with V. Likhachev. The publisher Alexei Suvorin became compelled, since he could not be an editor for reasons of censorship. Actually, he officially remained the publisher of this newspaper until the end of his days. The audience expected a lot from Alexei. Everyone thought that the well-known "St. Petersburg Gazette" would come back to life again. For the first issues, N. Nekrasov and ME Saltykov-Shchedrin suggested their works. However, the expectations of the majority did not materialize. The newspaper's publishing expressed great sympathy for the Bulgarian uprising in 1876. This brought Suvorin Alexei Sergeyevich even more respect and fame not only in the circles of his former admirers, but also among the new public. However, after a couple of years, everyone realized that Suvorin's witty tongue would not return. With each issue, the newspaper became more and more conservative.

However, it must be said that the newspaper slightly depersonalized the image of Suvorin. In general, his style remained the same, although much has changed in him. His advantage was that he avoided gross, vulgar and unreasonable attacks, as practiced in a number of other newspapers. But the fact remains: with the acquisition of the newspaper, Suvorin became smaller. Only occasionally he led the rubric "Little Letters."

He took an active part in the creation of a monarchist organization called the "Russian Assembly" in 1901. For a while he even joined the council of the organization, but over time this activity attracted him ever less.

Dramaturgy

In recent years, Suvorin Alexei Sergeyevich, whose brief biography we are considering, was carried away by the theater. This sphere was close to him, since he repeatedly acted as a reviewer.

As a playwright, he gained popularity thanks to the drama "Tatiana Repina". It was inspired by real tragic events, namely, the suicide of a young Kharkiv actress E. Kadmina in 1881. A. Chekhov even wrote a small continuation, which later Suvorin highly appreciated and printed.

No less success had a drama called Medea, which was co-written with V. Burenin. Also, a historical drama was titled "Dmitry Pretender and Princess Xenia". One might think that the genre of drama was the favorite for Suvorin, but it is not so. He wrote comedies and jokes: "Women and Men", "He is retired", "Honest Word", "Stock Swirl".

Publishing house

Since 1972 he began to publish the "Russian Calendar". Even during the purchase of "New time" bought a bookstore and a large publishing company. By the way, she occupied the leading place in book trade. Since 1895, he published a well-known reference book "All Russia". Also published a directory of addresses "All Petersburg". Here information was not only about the streets and institutions of the city, but also provided a list of tenants.

A family

Suvorin Alexey Sergeevich, whose detailed biography is presented above, consisted of two marriages. He made his first marriage with Anna Baranova, an interpreter. In the marriage 5 children were born: 3 sons and 2 daughters. Son Michael became a famous playwright, writer, public figure of a conservative orientation and a journalist, that is, followed in the footsteps of his father. He died in exile in Belgrade. The second son, Alexei, became a journalist and publisher. He wrote under the pseudonym Poroshin. Actively popularized therapeutic starvation. For unclear reasons committed suicide.

The second time I married Anna Orfanova, who was the sister of the writer-populist M. Orfanov, who wrote under the pseudonym Mishla. In the marriage, 9 children were born. Son Boris, born in 1879, became a publisher, journalist, writer. He died in exile in Yugoslavia. Daughter Anastasia became an actress.

The hero died in the warm summer of 1912 in Tsarskoye Selo.

Summarizing the article, I want to say that Suvorin Alexei Sergeyevich left a worthy mark in history. What was his biography? Alexey Suvorin was a versatile person. His biography is full of different occupations, in each of which he was a worthy figure. Unfortunately, in wide circles his name is not very well known, but in narrow Alexey Suvorin is known and respected.
