What is Charlie? His role in the Rhinevan Saga

The first book of Andrzej Sapkowski's trilogy The Fools' Tower was published in 2002. The events of the novel take place against the backdrop of the Hussite uprisings. The book relates the reader to real historical personalities and actions. The battles described by Sapkowski took place in reality. Little-known history of the Middle Ages has gained a new popularity thanks to the writer.

Magic or history?

The main hero of the saga is helped by four friends. Among them is the old warrior Charles, the angel in the human body, the young girl and the priest. Exciting adventures against the background of real historical events are provided with mystical details.

Never would the reader have become interested in such a lively novel of the Polish writer, if not for a raid of mysticism and magic in the novel. In addition to knights and priests, cunning feudal lords and heroes - fighters for justice, the book features wizards and dark forces. Is it possible to believe the author and call the novel historical? In the Middle Ages, people believed in magicians. Such a story could well be told by one of its participants. Having reached our days slightly modified, the mystical trilogy has occupied the minds and hearts of many readers.

The abundance of humor in the book speaks about the author's negative attitude to the church, but not to faith. He truly loves or hates his heroes, giving them supernatural power. However, not everything is solved by magic. His heroes Sapkovsky endows with real qualities, which ultimately help them fulfill their mission. An example is Charles. The saga of the Reynevan would have remained a love story without him, no more.

Charley's Characteristics

Such an associate of the protagonist of Reynevan is Charles - a retired soldier, somewhat tired of life. Knowledge of military art, intuition and practical cleansing help out not only the Soldier of Fortune himself.

He reluctantly, once again trying to profit for himself, still helps the protagonist. It is he who is best able to act in a critical situation. Simultaneously, this character knows in advance all the answers like the encyclopedia "Who is that?" What is it? " Charlie managed to visit both a warrior and a monk.

Passed the road to the world's lovers, the magician and herbalist Reinevan von Belyau finds two comrades-in-arms at once. The antipode of the intelligent and experienced Charlemy became Samson Medoc - a monk-clerk, a mentally retarded youth of outstanding physical strength. In poor man, as a result of an unfortunate rite of exorcism, an angel moved to help Reinevan.

Charlie. Character or historical personality?

It is not known whether Charlie was aware of the significance of his journey from the very beginning. Sapkovsky in the mouth of his hero has put a lot of wisdom and humor. Phrases of Charley for fans of the trilogy have become winged. So, Charlie says: "The church, the tavern, the brothel, between them a bunch of shit - that's the parabola of human life". The gift of foresight, inherent in Charlem, does not come from magic or holiness, like Samson Medoc, in which the angel lived.

The skepticism of the Soldier of Fortune is caused by a rich life experience and good adaptability to different circumstances. Observation Charlemy more than once saves heroes. Nevertheless, he, without concealing himself, foretells Reynevan's martyrdom: "You did right. And you, probably, will be hanged for this. For such is usually the fate of those who act faithfully. "

In reserve, the former monk and soldier always have a spare action plan, a couple of encouraging phrases are always prepared, in all he finds benefits and positive sides for himself. In such a seemingly crude character, wisdom, delicacy, and the ability to enjoy life came together.

Eternal satellites of Reinevan - Samson and Charley - disappear completely at the end of the second book of "God's Warriors", but the reader has a weak hope that they will reappear. The author of the trilogy is forced to sacrifice some of the heroes, but thanks to this the work becomes more ambitious and epic.

Speaking of what Charlie is in literature and history, one can assume that the image of his collective and real historical personality behind him is not worth it. However, it is possible that some of his adventures really happened to some people in history. Trying to figure out what Charlie is, listen to how his name sounds. Phonosematic meaning of the word - quiet, gray, rough. It is this character that appears before the reader.

It is unlikely that the author himself can explain in detail what Charles is in his book, since initially the gray and inconspicuous character, thanks to the stable expressions and short sayings among the fans, became independent and exists separately from the book.

About the book

In difference from the five-book about the Witcher, previously written by Sapkowski, the trilogy about Reynevan became truly touching for the soul of the work. Some moments of the book are given too hard for a typical game story.

Many moments of medieval life and European history are too truthful and frank to take them calmly. Of course, Sapkovsky worked in the archives for a long time before taking up his work.
