Cola with milk: you can not drink experiment

Surely you have known for a long time interesting experiment with the addition of cola in the cola of "Mentos". However, with this experience, the fantasy of modern amateur chemists is not exhausted, and YouTube has a new, no less popular video with the addition of Coca-Cola ... milk.

The taste and color

To try, of course, such a "nuclear" mixture, as a cola with milk, is not recommended. But the colors of the original drink, when mixed with a new ingredient, change almost before our eyes. As is known, the acid pH level of a cola varies between 2.5 and 4.5. Due to this, it can be used to polish old coins and even to scrape off the popular sweet drink dirt from engine engines. In milk, the pH level is normal. So what happens if you pour milk into Coca-Cola?

Progress of the experiment

  • Open a new bottle with any soda water of a dark brown color. The famous "Coca-Cola" is great for this experience, but it is possible to use any other cola of different manufacturers.
  • Accurately pour the milk of 2% fat into a bottle with a sweet drink, filling the container to the top.
  • Replace the cover and carefully tighten it.
  • Now you need a little patience. Check how the cola with milk looks, at the same time intervals - for example, every half hour or hourly.
  • Become a witness to an amazing chemical experiment. Slowly, but surely, the milk settles on the bottom of the bottle, and the soda water seems invisible. Terrific, is not it?

How it works

Of course, the cola with milk does not become invisible, it only brightens, while on the bottom falls an ugly dark brown sediment. This chemical reaction is due to the interaction between orthophosphoric acid and milk. Acid molecules combine with milk molecules, increasing their density and thereby separating from other liquid. The remaining substance, having a lower density than the new compound, appears at the top.

Options

Experiment "cola with milk" - an excellent entertainment for a friendly party, as well as an exciting scientific experience for children. Steve Spangler, the owner of the blog about extraordinary chemical experiments, proposes to try a variety of mixes and draw their own conclusions.

For his line of experiments, Spangler used several types of milk and only two varieties of cola (normal and dietary). It is curious that cola and milk behaved approximately identically in each case. An exception was the experience with almond milk - a sweet drink acquired a shade of lighter, but did not give such a powerful sediment and did not justify the audience's expectations of the lack of epic.

It is possible to vary the conditions of the experiment in different ways: a cola mixed with milk always undergoes a certain chemical reaction. For example, Spangler suggests not to screw the bottle cap. Without pressure and with the use of skim milk , a lighter drink with a stable foam is obtained, but without sediment. Thus, the best results with ordinary soda water give fat, skim and soy milk, the worst - almond milk and fatty cream.

About what it says

After watching a variety of videos about the cola blast mixed with Mentos sweets (as well as numerous stories about the ideal cleaning of copper coins), most consumers stopped trusting the advertising of Coca-Cola and decided that there was too much "chemistry" in their favorite drink. Yes, cola and milk do not add a desire to drink soda, but all these amateur experiments do not at all indicate potential harm of sweet water. Yes, it can be used to clean copper coins. But the same can be done with any sufficiently acidic liquid. You, most likely, will be surprised, but grapefruit juice handles this difficult task . It is not only harmless - it is very useful for the human body, but chemically a lot of acid is contained in greigrut juice. In Coca-Cola this acid is neutralized by a large amount of sugar. Therefore, the only danger of love for sweet soda is the excessive consumption of sugar - the latter often leads to obesity, the development of diabetes and other health problems.

In all other respects, the cola is quite safe - do not let the "viral" video inspire you with false beliefs.
