Putty plasterboard with your own hands: step by step instruction

One of the most frequently used materials for finishing interior spaces is gypsum board, which allows not only to level the walls as soon as possible, but also to create partitions, niches and other structures. However, it is not enough just to erect the required structure, it must also be brought to a worthy appearance. As a rule, plasterboard constructions are finished with the same materials as bearing walls: they are painted or wallpapered. And if earlier used lightweight paper wallpaper, which is often glued overlap, today the use of modern materials requires special attention to the smoothness and evenness of the wall surface to be trimmed. Therefore, we suggest to consider how plasterboard plastering is performed by our own hands. A step-by-step instruction will be presented below.

Why putty drywall?

Despite the fact that the drywall has a fairly flat surface, before you finish it on the finish, you need to make amends for all the flaws that formed on the material during installation. In addition, it will be necessary to seal the joints of the sheets both in the area of the wall and in the corners. For this, two types of preparatory finishing are used: plastering and puttying.

Plaster is a coarser material and is used for leveling the surface in case of large defects, therefore it is usually used on concrete walls. The putty has a fine-grained structure, which makes it almost ideal to level the plasterboard for finishing. The most important is this moment for subsequent painting and wallpapering. If the wall does not have an ideally smooth surface, the wallpaper will begin to diverge, and even the slightest irregularities will be visible on the painted plasterboard.

In addition, the puttying of walls (gypsum board), produced by oneself, is an additional protection, which is important for finishing finishing. For example, if you paste wallpaper directly on the GCR, there is a good chance that it will swell from the glue, and the new wallpaper will be distorted. In addition, when changing the finish, you are guaranteed to remove not only the old material, but also the layer of plasterboard.

Features of puttying

The process of puttying is quite complicated and requires special care and thoroughness. Therefore, many prefer to order these works from professionals. However, in order to save money, you can perform such a procedure, as plastering plasterboard, with your own hands. To do this, you just have to be patient and learn some subtleties of surface treatment in each case. And also master the basic techniques of puttying, as the plasterboard putty under the wallpaper, made by hand, differs from the work on the preparation of the wall for painting. This must be taken into account.

Separate attention should be puttying joints and corners, since this work requires a preliminary laying of the tape-serpants (special construction material to strengthen the seams). It will prevent the appearance of cracks, which may appear from the vibration or expansion of drywall under the influence of moisture.

Material selection

Today, there are quite a lot of different kinds of putty on the market, which differ in structure: coarse starting and finer finishing.

Starting, the price of which is the lowest of all options, is used to equalize the irregularities with surface drops from 0.5 to 2 cm. Therefore, for plasterboard it is practically not used. As a rule, this material is immediately covered with the finishing putty, which has a finer granular structure. With it, you can immediately level the surface to a perfectly smooth condition, suitable even for painting. However, in the case of improper installation of drywall or visible damage, it is recommended first to apply a layer of starting putty and wait for it to dry completely. Then primrutovat and even then to process a surface by a finishing agent.

Varieties

In addition, they make a difference in the composition of the putty. It happens on plaster, cement and polymer basis. Depending on the room in which the repair work is carried out and the operating conditions, the most suitable means for finishing is selected. Each species has its advantages and disadvantages:

  • Gypsum plaster has a very fine structure, so it often acts as a finish finish. However, the use of this material in rooms with high humidity is not recommended, since such a composition absorbs moisture from the air well, and in this case even the priming of the surface will not help.
  • For places that are constantly exposed to high humidity, it is preferable to use cement based filler, which is very resistant to this effect. In addition, this species is distinguished by high strength and durability of the coating.
  • The polymeric appearance is the most plastic and is best applied to the surface, so the plastering of plasterboard ceilings with their own hands is most often performed by this material.

What kind of putty is better to use?

Another difference in the material is the kind in which it is sold. There are two options: dry mix in bags and ready-made solution, similar to sour cream, in buckets.

On the one hand, the ready-made putty, which can be applied without preliminary kneading, is most convenient. While preparing a dry mix requires certain knowledge and skill.

On the other hand, the finished solution is 1.3-1.6 times more expensive. Therefore, it makes sense to carefully choose the material. In this case it is worth considering that the cement putty is produced only as a dry mixture due to the peculiarities of its composition.

If we talk about drywall, then in living rooms it is preferable to use gypsum putty, and in such premises as a bathroom, kitchen or bathroom, - polymer.

Important! It is not recommended to use alkyd putty for finishing works on gypsum plasterboard. Its aggressive composition will destroy the upper layer of the GCR.

How to putty plasterboard: step by step instructions

Before proceeding with such work as plasterboard plastering with our own hands, the base is thoroughly cleaned beforehand from dust and dirt after installation work. In the event that in some places there are delaminations of the material, they must be removed and cleaned using fine sandpaper. Also do not forget to check how the self-tapping screws are screwed. Ideally, they should be slightly drowned in a sheet of drywall and not protrude above the surface.

After that, the surface is primed, leaving no untreated areas. It is best to apply 2-3 coats of primer. This is necessary for good adhesion of the material. When applying the composition, it not only additionally cleans the surface of the dust, but also impregnates the pores of the gypsum board. After applying each coat, the primer must be left to dry completely. The drying time can be seen on the packaging of a particular product.

By the way, it is worthwhile to know that the plasterboard putty technique with its own hands involves finishing the entire surface of the wall. It is not necessary to save on building materials and handle only corners or joints. Subsequently, when painting or sticking the wallpaper, a drywall without a coating will be very prominent.

Preliminary preparation of plasterboard

At the next stage, it is necessary to repair all more or less noticeable depressions on the surface of the drywall. These include holes from unsuccessfully screwed screws, damage from installation, and other flaws. For these works, usually use a small spatula.

Also plastering of plasterboard joints by oneself is made, and it is preferable to choose a composition specially designed for these purposes. First we lay a band-serpyanka. To do this, put a tape on the putty, previously applied to the plasterboard, which is covered with another layer of the composition. After that the material is carefully leveled with a wide spatula and further plastering of gypsum boards with their own hands is carried out.

The corners are treated in a similar way, the only difference is that special plastic or metal corners are used for these joints. They protect the edges of gypsum board from mechanical damage. It is especially important for external corners, for example partitions or niches. For internal corners, if the sheets are tight and there are no large gaps, it is permissible to use the same serpentine tape.

Application of putty on the wall

In order to correctly apply the filler to the surface, two types of spatula are used: the material itself is applied and leveled with a large spatula, a small one is used as an auxiliary tool.

If the initial puttying is initially intended, depending on the condition of the drywall, it is applied sufficiently thickly within 0.5-2 cm. If a layer of greater thickness is required, in theory it can be performed in two stages. However, the cost of such repairs will be quite expensive. Therefore, it is better to apply plaster for the first leveling layer. This material is much cheaper.

In any case, the first layer is necessarily left to dry completely, then it is primed and dried again. Next, you can apply the next leveling layer. Start plastering of plasterboard with their own hands is carried out to the maximum level surface. After that, it is dried and ground.

Features of applying the finish putty

After the layer of starting putty (if it was necessary), finish the composition. This work is more laborious, since it is carried out by a layer of just a few millimeters. Finishing putty is applied very carefully and in small portions. Level it to the maximum and dry it. After that it is necessary to carefully check the smoothness of the surface. The fact is that sometimes there are small hillocks or, drying out, the material, on the contrary, somewhat fails. Depressions can be covered with some more of the composition, the mounds are easily removed by fine-grained nazhdachkoy.

Once a perfectly flat surface is reached, it must be sanded with zero abrasive paper to absolute smoothness.

Ceiling processing

A particularly difficult measure is the puttying of the ceiling, which is recommended to be carried out with a polymer elastic filler. Despite the fact that the material is plastic enough, applying the composition on a horizontal surface will require a lot of effort. Puttying is performed smoothly towards yourself. This process is quite difficult for beginners in the construction industry. Therefore, it is better to first see how someone else performs the puttying of the ceiling from plasterboard with their own hands. Video of the work of professionals will visually show all the nuances of this procedure.

All preliminary and subsequent operations, such as priming and sanding, are carried out in the same way as in the case of a vertical surface.

How to putty under different finish trim?

There are several nuances of processing drywall, which depend on the subsequent finishing of the walls:

  • If you subsequently plan to paste light paper wallpaper, putty plasterboard under the wallpaper with your own hands should be done very carefully, with the necessary alignment of all the flaws. Otherwise, after the finishing works, all the flaws will appear on the material.
  • For heavy wallpaper, on the contrary, it is preferable to use only the starting filler, which will create a rough coating. On this basis it will be easier to paste the wallpaper due to the good adhesion of the material.
  • The most difficult is plasterboard plastering with their own hands for painting, in this case the surface is smoothed to the ideal state. Professionals even use a lamp for these purposes, under the light of which they reveal the slightest flaws on the surface.
