How do wall plastering works?

Repair is a time-consuming task, requiring not only certain costs and the availability of free time, but also special knowledge. Therefore, it is often delayed for an indefinite period, and the tenants begin to feel that the completion will never come. When undertaking repairs in his apartment or some part of it, the owner must first familiarize himself with the techniques of performing the task. Especially this applies to those people who first hold the paint and spatula in their hands, and do not really know what to do with them. After all, despite the seeming ease, in every case there are secrets that can greatly facilitate and speed up the process.

A lot of questions can arise when it is time to repair the walls in the apartment. It is very important to know how to properly perform this work, otherwise it will have to be re-done again and again to a satisfactory result. Here we are talking about such an important preparatory stage as wall plastering.

Firstly, it is worth considering the types of putty. There are a lot of them on the shelves of building stores, and it's time to get confused, but there are only two main categories to which you need to pay attention: dry mix and ready. Both are made on the basis of drying oil, the composition can differ insignificantly from different manufacturers. There are special mixtures for leveling the painted surfaces, as well as putty for plastic, which can be applied with a minimum layer (thinner than 1 mm). Also, remember the existence of mixtures for dry and wet rooms. When buying, you need to pay special attention to this.

Preliminary preparation

Puttying of walls is made in order to make their surface as smooth and smooth as possible, and also to remove factory distortions, if any. This will facilitate the subsequent work with the walls: decorative painting, wallpapering, etc. It is best to buy in the store already ready, diluted in the right proportions mixture, because it's the first time you can not make it yourself. You will also need two spatulas, large and small (a pair of 15 cm and 20-25 cm is a good fit). Narrow is more suitable for performing fine work and handling problem areas, but with a wider one is faster.

Principle of work: wall plastering

First of all you will need to get rid of the walls: if they were pasted with wallpaper, you need to carefully scrape the leftovers as far as possible. This is done so that pieces of paper do not stick to the spatula and do not interfere with the process of applying the mixture. Upon completion of work, the last layer is recommended to use the so-called "finishing" filler. Unlike usual, it leaves no traces when touching, and glue on it, for example, wallpaper is much more convenient.

If there are residues of old putty or other poorly adhering coatings on the walls, they also need to be removed. Otherwise, in the future all this may fall off, and the work done will be in vain. Furniture, of course, better to move to other rooms or advance in advance, so as not to be distracted from the main business.

Now you can go to work. First apply a primer (roller). This is a simple process that will not take long (10-15 minutes per medium sized room). After a few hours, when it completely dries, the surface is ready to putty. It is best to apply the mixture in three layers: for the first two, the usual putty is used, and for the latter it is desirable to take the "finish". In the event that the surface is very uneven, more layers may be needed. In the process of work, one should try not to leave traces of a spatula (strips) on the walls. In fact, this is not an easy task, but it is very important. Especially when the turn comes to the last two layers. The thickness of the mixture should not be large. It is better, if through the next layer will be a little glimpse of the previous one. After drying, the surface of the wall is leveled by sanding.

At this stage the puttying of the walls is completed. Before starting any further work, it will only be necessary to apply a primer and allow the surface to dry. It is important: after applying it, sand the surface by hand and remove any found defects, it is already impossible, so be careful.
