Modern decorative paints are endowed with many undeniable advantages and more and more often replace the wallpaper that is familiar to all, decorating the walls of living rooms, children's, kitchens, bedrooms and even bathrooms.

Advantages of decorative paints

The main difference between decorative and conventional paint is its aesthetic component, which allows achieving a surprisingly beautiful and unusual decorative effect. The advantages of such a finishing material are very many:

  • The service life of the painted surface is several times higher than the period of operation of the plaster or wallpaper. In this case, the decorative paint is perfectly maintained in any premises, including rooms with high humidity and kitchens.
  • Decorative paints in the sun do not burn out, they are not afraid of scratches and sharp claws of animals, blows, abrasion and mold. Dirt from them is very easy to wash off.
  • Surfaces painted with decorative paint do not have joints, which allows creating a single harmonious picture.
  • A huge selection of different shades and all sorts of design effects can satisfy even the most demanding professional designers and amaze inexperienced homeowners.
  • Decorative painting of walls with water-based paints is an excellent option for a children's room, as they have an absolutely harmless composition. Such an environmentally friendly coating does not contain harmful carcinogens and does not cause allergies.
  • This is a universal material that makes each wall unique. Due to their moisture resistance, they can be used for façade work and in the bathroom.
  • Decorative paint on the walls looks natural and rich, turning an ordinary room into a beautiful and cozy home.
  • Prior to application, no removal of the previous layer is required.
  • Paints perfectly fit on any surface: wooden, cement, particleboard, gypsum plasterboard and even glass. The only requirement: the painted surface of walls or ceiling should be flat.

Tools for creating unusual decorative effects when painting walls

Decorative painting of walls is carried out with the help of tools such as:

  • Usual fur or rubber roller.
  • Spatulas (metal wide, dentate, plastic, rubber).
  • Rigid sponge and brush.
  • The Venetian Trowel.
  • Sandpaper or bar for grinding.
  • Stencil.

Of course, not all these tools will be needed. For example, a stencil will only be needed if you need to apply a pattern or pattern to the paint layer. The Venetian trowel is useful for creating a convex texture, and a brush with a tough nap is used to create expressive strips on the surface of the paint. Therefore, before acquiring a tool, you need to decide which decorative effect will be created.

However, the cost of all these tools is quite low, and they will last long. Also do not forget about gloves.

Rollers for decorative painting of walls

A textured roller will help to make an interior design according to an individual pattern. This painting tool is useful to everyone who wants to make a designer decorative painting of the walls with their own hands. A positive feature of the rollers is that the cost of their purchase is significantly compensated for by long-term use and the ability to decorate not only the surface of the walls, but also the ceiling, wallpaper for painting and even fabric.

Types of roller surface

To paint the wall you will need a structural roller. It can be used in two ways.

  • Use as a tool for stamping an image.
  • Giving a different texture by treating the surface with a rough roller or a roller with a pattern, achieving the effect of imitation stone, glaze, marble with pronounced relief. Each idea requires the purchase of an appropriate instrument.

Rough rollers for surface painting are made of the following materials:

  • Rubber;
  • Foam rubber;
  • Wood;
  • Metal;
  • Fabric;
  • Fur.

To create a pattern on a flat surface, all varieties can be used.

Structure of decorative rollers

All rollers for decorative painting of walls consist of a cylinder, handle and a metal rod-holder. Structural tools used to create patterns on the surface are endowed with two components: a foam cylinder that collects ink, and a rubber nozzle with carved ornament for the print.

Preparation of walls for decorative painting

If the wall is painted for the first time, the preparation will take some time. With a simple modification of the previously painted surface, the paint can be applied directly to it.

Preparation for primary painting is divided into the following stages:

  1. Removing the old cover. It is recommended to moisten the wallpaper first with water, and then remove it from the wall. Other types of coatings are much easier to remove with a spatula. In order to prevent dust from entering your eyes, you can also moisten the surface of the wall in advance. Do better work in goggles.
  2. The surface freed from the old coating should dry well. With abundant moisturizing, this process can last for 24 hours.
  3. Inspected surface to identify defects. In the presence of cracks, they first dilate, then fill with cement and do grout.
  4. To putty on the wall well kept, the surface is treated with a starting primer.
  5. Wall plastering is done .
  6. The finished surface is polished (grinded), treated with a primer.

The wall is ready for decorative painting.

If decorative plastering of the walls is done for painting, then it must be primed. You can choose any color, but it's better to get the paint itself water-resistant, durable and non-flammable. It is applied with a roller. After drying, the relief parts are painted in a different color. Can be fixed with water based varnish.

Methods of performing decorative painting

There are a variety of types of decorative painting of walls. The simplest method is to create a monophonic, but effective surface. To do this, you only need a roller and a finished decorative paint with special effects, for example:

  • With mother of pearl. The surface, covered with such a composition, resembles silk in appearance. Decorative painting of walls with this effect is especially appropriate in small rooms where the sun is rare. Walls are even easy to paint on their own.
  • With velvet or velor effect. Solid fractions, which are part of the paint, after drying, make the walls as if they are covered with expensive cloth. Only when you touch the coating with your fingers can you feel the difference.

There are also decorative compounds with small stones, shells, particles resembling flakes of different colors or metal. The use of such compounds allows you to transform the interior beyond recognition without any special effort and time spent on painting. The walls, covered with such colors, serve as an excellent background for furniture, paintings and other interior decorations.

Special techniques for decorating walls

If the solid color of the walls does not suit the property owners, you can paint them or add different effects. For some of them the usual acrylic or oil paint is suitable, for others a special compound is required, which is usually sold in ready-made form.

Spot application of decorative paint

This is a fairly long process, requiring considerable attention and effort, but the beauty and bulk of the surface will be very pleasing to the eye for a very long time. The application of the paint is done using a sponge and a brush.

Marble painting

For this method of painting you will need a paint of three colors, one of which is background and the other two are basic colors. A background shade is first applied to the wall, then the main paints are applied unevenly with a broad brush. After drying with a goose feather or a thin brush, the streaks are painted with the paint of the base layer.

The effect of granite

This method will require a special decorative paint, which consists of acrylic bubbles, painted in different shades. When applied from a spray gun, they break up on the surface and create a layer on the surface that is very similar to the granite texture.

Painting the walls with a cloth

This is a very popular method. On the wall, first the main lighter layer is applied, than the next one. The next is done by a roller, which is wrapped in a cloth.

Decorative painting of walls is cheap, but beautifully can also be done using a stencil (bought or cut yourself). First, the main color is applied with a roller, and a spatula or pattern on top of the spatula. Thus, you can get both a simple monochrome drawing, and a complex one, in several colors.

Decorative painting of walls with the effect of "crumpled paper" is carried out as follows. On the applied base layer, a crumpled thin paper is applied and the top is "painted" with paint of the same color.

There are also more sophisticated techniques.
