Moldavia: flag and coat of arms of the country

Each country has its own history of the appearance of state symbols. Studying it, you can get to know the people who created it or chose it. That is why it will be interesting to learn about the coat of arms and the flag of Moldova for all who want to get to know this country closer.

Modern look

The currently used option is a rectangle with a ratio of one to two. The flag of Moldova is tricolor, its stripes are equal and are located vertically. The shaft has a bright blue color, also called Berlin azure, the center is yellow, and the edge is red. In the middle the state emblem is depicted. It is a shield on the chest of an eagle, with a golden cross in its beak. The width of the emblem refers to the length of the flag as one to five. The combination of colors has been used in the country for a long time, but the image in the middle appeared not so long ago and before it looked quite different.

History of appearance

So, how long has the symbolism used by Moldova used? The flag of the country begins its history during the time of the principality. Even then, there was a red color on it , and the center of the cloth was occupied by the image of the coat of arms, made in gold. The main symbol then served as the head of a tour or a bison, it was also depicted on seals and coins. From the first decades of the nineteenth century, the flag of Moldova also uses blue. Initially, he occupied all the cloth, and it housed a red canton with white stars and a head of a bison. In 1917, a democratic republic appeared, which chose tricolor as a symbol. Then it was horizontal, but colors were used already in a modern combination. Then the country became known as the Moldavian SSR, and not Moldova, the flag also changed according to allied standards: a red cloth with a green stripe in the middle was supplemented with socialist images of a sickle, a hammer and a five-pointed star. This option existed until 1990. The modern flag of Moldova, a description of which can be read above, was adopted upon independence. In 2010, it was made a small change: before the coat of arms was placed only on the front, and now appeared in a mirror image on the back.

Similar cloths of other countries

The same color is used not only by Moldova. The flag of Romania completely coincides in both shades and in their arrangement. This is a vertical tricolor with azure, yellow and red stripes. The only difference is the absence of a coat of arms in the central part. The coincidence in this case is symbolic. Moldova chose such shades in order to emphasize the proximity of states. The African country of Chad also enjoys a similar pattern. It also does not have an image of the emblem, in addition, the first vertical strip is executed in a darker shade of blue. Finally, it is worth mentioning one more state. Ultimately similar to that used by Moldova, the flag belongs to Andorra. The difference lies in the fact that on the central yellow strip there is another emblem, much larger and made in red and gold in the form of a shield divided into several parts.

State Emblem

This country symbol looks like a crossed shield with red and blue fields. In the center there is an image of the head of a bison or a tour. Between the horns he has a star with eight rays, to the right - a rose with five petals, and to the left - a crescent directed to the left. Each element is made in golden color. The shield is located on the chest near the eagle, with a golden cross in its beak. In the claws of the bird are a green olive branch and a scepter. Such a combination of symbols was created in 1990, after the collapse of the USSR. Its creator was the artist Gheorghe Vrabie, who worked together with a specialist in heraldry Maria Dogaru. It was she who came up with an olive branch that would reflect the desire of the Moldovan people for peace. In November of the same year, the arms were officially approved and have not been changed since. It is in this version that it is used on the state standard, on the front part being placed in the traditional form, and on the inside - in the mirror image. In the near future, the symbolism may be amended to get rid of similarities with the Romanian arms and flag and emphasize sovereignty.
