History of the monument

Since the 50s of the last century, the well-known architect Evgeni Vuchetich, who was the author of monumental monuments in Volgograd and Berlin, conceived the feat of Soviet soldiers on the Kursk Bulge. The project of the author assumed the erection on the square of the sculpture "Motherland-Mother" with the height of 18 meters. At this site it was planned to place 9 busts of military commanders. But even a small part of the work was not performed, as the construction of the monument was interrupted by the death of the architect.

The erection of the memorial was continued only in 1987. The concrete piles were reinforced, and the arc-shaped podium of the monument was built. But the years of perestroika again all crossed out. The construction of the Arc de Triomphe was again suspended until 1995. The next project was realized already by the Kursk architects, in particular M.L. Teplitsky. On behalf of the governor of the region, it was decided to build a whole memorial complex to the 55th anniversary of the victory in the Great War. The Triumphal Arch (Kursk) was built on time. And already in 1999 on the memorial lay the majestic church-bell tower, consisting of three tiers 47 meters high.

The opening of the Arc de Triomphe was planned for the 55th anniversary of the celebration of the Great Victory. Just in time for this remarkable date, the construction of the monument was completed.

But the opening of the complex was done twice. For the first time the Arc de Triomphe (Kursk) was opened on the eve of the main May holiday of 2000 with the direct participation of the governor of the Kursk region. The second time the gates of the memorial complex were opened in the same year, but already by the president of the country V.V. Putin.
