How it all began?

To begin with, the State Museum of Nature of Kharkiv National University. V. Karazin is one of the oldest museums in Europe. For a qualitative learning process in 1806 Count Potocki acquired from Gruner, a Hanoverian pharmacist, a small collection of foreign things, which Professor Andre gathered. A year later he acquired another collection - the zoological collection, which was collected by the Italian Chetti. History

The Museum of Nature in Kharkov has long used the two collections mentioned above for the conduct of training sessions. They became the basis for the study of the natural sciences. Professor of Botany F. Delavin became the first keeper of the zoological collection, and mineralogical collections were deposited in the chemistry professor Shnaubert. He, by the way, came to work at the university from Germany on the personal recommendation of I.-V. Goethe - a member of the Kharkov Imperial University. For many years, the names have changed, and the teachers have become various learned people. Among them, it is worth noting the following: I. Kalenichenko, A. Nikolsky, A. Maslovsky, N. Borisyak, A. Levakovskiy, D. Sobolev and others.

Activities of Professor I. Krinitsky

The activity of this professor should be noted separately, since he made a huge contribution to the development of the Kharkov National University. VN Karazin and the Museum of Nature. In just 10 years (from 1826 to 1836) he managed to improve the material base of the museum qualitatively. During this time, the number of exhibits has increased almost 4-fold. All collections were systematized, detailed catalogs appeared. Also, a special laboratory was created to study, prepare and assemble all the accumulated material. During the leadership of I. Krinitsky, the first scientific expeditions were laid. Funds of the institution were significantly enlarged due to the purchase of various exhibits, mainly in Germany.

To date, the Kharkiv National University. It is difficult to imagine VN Karazin without the Museum of Nature. The latter is the educational and scientific center of Ukraine.

For visitors 23 rooms are open, where you can see scientific exhibits of 4 departments: vertebrates and invertebrates, geological, nature conservation and the evolution of the organic world. The department of the collection of vertebrate animals occupies 1200 m 2 . The visitor has the opportunity to see almost all the largest vertebrate animals of the world fauna. What strikes every spectator is the spectacularity of the exhibits and their scale. About 30 dioramas show collections of amphibians, fish, reptiles. Surprised viewers diorama called "Amazon", which shows live representatives of the ichthyofauna. Attract attention and the skeleton of the whale, whose length is 20 m. Very bright and impressive are the dioramas "Far Eastern Pinnipeds" and "Bird Bazaar."

In the department of nature protection and the evolution of the organic world, one can learn about the basic principles of the historical development of the organic world from the earliest times to the forms of life known to us today. Much attention is paid to the role of the external environment in the process of evolution. It is worth noting that this department of the museum owns the largest collection of primates in Ukraine. It began to be created in the XIX century, when the zoological collection of Count Pototsky appeared in the walls of the university. The most valuable exhibits of this collection are the oldest.
