Beginning and development

The first exhibition complex in Russia, specializing exclusively in photography, was opened in Moscow in 1996. Olga Sviblova, an art critic, culturologist and director of documentary films about contemporary art, became the initiator, soul and the main ascetic of the project. Within a few months after the foundation, the Moscow House of Photography became a real cultural center where exhibitions were held, permanent exhibitions worked, and several thousands of rare photographs were stored in the storerooms.

Such a significant expansion of activities led to the transformation of the Moscow House of Photography into the Multimedia Complex of Actual Arts, or the MAMM - Multimedia Art Museum. Moscow has always been supportive of the newest art, so the transformation of the brainchild of Olga Sviblova from a small exposition to a museum and cultural center was not accidental and quite natural.

History in the focus of art

Today the funds of the complex number more than 80,000 exhibits. The storage department is the holy of holies of the museum, unique historical photographs, works of eminent masters of the past and the best photos of contemporary artists are collected here. The earliest daguerreotypes are dated 1850. At that time they did not talk about photography as an art. The new engineers were just beginning to search for the best methods of transferring images to metal plates or paper. Such exhibits require special conditions, careful storage and professional treatment, so the presence in the collections of photographs of the middle of the XIX century is the best indicator of the high level of the museum.

Contemporary art of photography

Multimedia Art Museum (Moscow) cooperates with many museums and galleries. They often hold joint exhibitions and organize thematic exhibitions.
