How to write Cover Letter? Example in English

Most people believe that by writing a resume, they already have a good chance of being hired by their dreams. However, few know that one resume, or Curriculum Vitae (CV), is not enough. It is necessary to make sure that the employer from the set of summaries sent to him was the first to consider yours. You can report your proficiency and tell about your motivation (and need) with a cover letter - Cover Letter (or Cover Letter for CV). An example in English will be discussed in this article.

How to write Cover Letter in English

You will find out what should include a cover letter and get a spread out algorithm for writing a cover letter for your resume. For some professions, how to write Cover Letter in English, the example will be given separately.

This letter includes words of greeting, the reason for the letter, a description of the skills and abilities of the candidate for the position and the words of farewell. Next we will similarly consider each item.

Greeting or Addressing

As in any other letter, the addressee must be present in the Cover letter. Example in English: "Dear Mr. Smith! "(Dear Mr. Smith!) Or" Dear Ms. Adams! "(Dear Mrs. Adams). If there is such an opportunity, it is worthwhile to find out the name of the person you are going to contact. If there is no such possibility, then you can simply "Dear Hiring Manager!" (Dear HR Manager). It is necessary to avoid the greeting "Hello" or "Hi" (Hello), as it involves more informal communication. Also, you should not write generalized: "To whom it may concern" (For whom it concerns).

However, if you write a cover letter in English for a Russian company, then the "Good morning, Alexander Mikhailovich" or "Hello, Marina Segreevna" (Hello, Marina Sergeevna) can be more familiar.

After the greeting you need to leave an empty line and introduce yourself. "My name is Maria Pavlova" (My name is Maria Pavlova) or "My name is Sergei Kotov" (My name is Sergey Kotov). After this sentence, you also need to skip one line.

Reason for writing

Next, you need to set out the purpose and cause of the letter in your Cover Letter. Example in English: "I am writing to apply for the position of a manager ..." (I write to you about the vacancy of the manager ...) or " I saw your job vacancy on the ... website" (I found your vacancy on ... site ». In the latter case, you can attach a link to the vacancy.

If someone from your friends recommended you this job, you can write: "I was told that your company was looking for a photographer" (I was told that your company is looking for a photographer).

Maybe this is the case when your potential employer himself asks you to send him your resume. Even if he does not say anything about the cover letter, this does not mean that he does not need to write. The employer simply takes it for granted that the candidate already knows that the resume should be backed up by a cover letter. In this case, you can write the following phrase in Cover Letter: "I'm sending you my resume, as you asked." If your friend recommended you this vacancy or company, you can write: "Alex Jones, a colleague of mine, said that my company is looking for a lawyer" (My colleague Alex Jones told me that your company is looking for a lawyer).

Here are a few more examples:

(I would like to learn about the opportunities for employment in the sales department, which were mentioned on the website of your company).

Also worth mentioning is that you attach a cover letter to your resume (and portfolio, if required). "Please find my resume and portfolio attached to this email" (I enclose to this letter an archive with my resume and portfolio).

Brief description of your skills

Before a potential employer opens your resume, he will first of all read the cover letter to the end. Therefore it is very important to interest the employer in this part of the letter.

In this part it is worthwhile to briefly talk about your education and specialty. Here you can describe your professional skills, achievements and skills that could relate to the position in question. In order not to be unfounded, we can back up the above with examples. What skills did you acquire, how did you use them in your previous work, what results did this bring to the company? Here you can draw a parallel and try to describe how your experience and achievements can affect the company in which you would like to work. All this should be briefly described in your Cover Letter.

Example in English

A design engineer or nurse, teacher or photographer - all of them are united by the fact that one of the main indicators in their employment is experience. Therefore, you can start as follows: "Having 5 years experience in the sales department and a strong educational background I believe that I can make a significant contribution to ..." (With five years of experience in sales and competitive education, I believe I can bring The benefit of your ... company).

"Presently I am deputed as a senior software programmer, working at ... for the last six years." (At present I am a deputy senior programmer in the company ... for 6 years already).

"I have extensive experience in programming in C ++, Java and .Net" (I have a lot of experience in programming in C ++, Java and .Net languages).

Also it is necessary to "direct" the potential employer to continue the conversation. For example, "Hope it will help you to make a decision about the future possible collaboration" (I hope this helps you decide on a possible future cooperation). Or "You may reach me at 8-999-999-99-99. I look forward to speaking with you »(You can contact me by phone at 8-999-999-99-99 .I will wait for your call).

Parting

Such letters imply fairly simple and standard phrases of farewell. For example: "Best regards, Maria Pavlova" (With best wishes, Maria Pavlova). Between the last sentence in the letter and the phrase "Best regards", leave an empty line. Its name and surname should be written from a new line.

Or "Through ... website, I learned about your bank's present career opportunities" (On the site ... I learned about the possibility of finding a job in your bank).

If you are writing to a potential employer in another country, it is unlikely that it will be convenient for him to call you on the phone. Therefore, after parting, it is desirable to indicate in addition to the phone and several other contact details, so that the employer could choose from them the most convenient. For example, you can write an email address (if you are not writing an email), Skype, a Facebook account.

As a doctor write Cover letter

If you have just finished postgraduate study at a medical university or are a practicing physician and want to change jobs, you will have to write Cover Letter. An example in English for a doctor we now consider.

The greeting and the reason for writing can be standard, as in the beginning of the article. In this case, it is worth emphasizing the description of your education and work experience. University at the Bachelor of Biology) or

"My 9 years' extensive experience, associate degree in medical assisting would enable me to contribute to ... Clinical in the role of a Medical Assistant" (My extensive nine-year experience, scientific degree in the field of medical care will allow me to contribute to ... a clinic In the role of paramedic).

It is not so important to what position you are applying for. In any case, it is necessary to attach a cover letter to your resume. So, even the waiters will be useful to write a good cover letter, especially if you want to get a job in a prestigious restaurant.

As in the service sector, write a cover letter

Now another Cover Letter is an example in English for a waiter. In it, after a standard greeting and a description of the reason for the letter, go on to describe your experience and education. Here you can specify any work related to customer service. Your summer work in a fast food restaurant or barman at half-time is also an experience. For example: "I have a previous waitressing experience and strong customer service skills. I have a working experience as a waiter and good customer service skills, which I received after working for more than two years Waiter while studying at school). Or "I worked in a four star hotel restaurant for 3 months last summer in Greece" (Three months I worked in a restaurant at the hotel four stars in Greece last summer).

If you have a small experience, it's worth briefly telling about your responsibilities and about what you learned during this time: "I am great at multi-tasking and can take on many guests at one time" (I am multi-tasked and can serve several guests At the same time). Next, you should tell about your personal qualities: "I am sociable and friendly, and I really enjoyed working as a waiter." At the end of the letter you can indicate the desired type of communication, say goodbye and mention the attached resume.

As you can see, writing a cover letter is not that difficult. The main thing is to be sincere and not write too long cover letters. Employers come to dozens, and sometimes hundreds of applications, which they must read. Your job as a candidate is to write a concise letter that will attract a potential employer from the first time.
