Eat or eat: how to speak and write correctly

Linguistic disputes often affect already seemingly well-established and familiar words. Increasingly, people are paying attention to literacy, working on themselves, and this can not but rejoice. "Eat" or "eat" - how correctly to say, in what situations it is appropriate to use and whether to correct others if they use the wrong version of the word, in your opinion? Philologists have already given explanations, and people continue to argue already by inertia, or by defending their personal views.

You can eat, you can eat

Is there any fundamental difference between these words? By and large, it is "to eat", "to eat". In the semantic sense, these are absolutely equal words, why are some people so indignant when they hear a variant that is not suitable, in their opinion? So eat or eat, how to speak, so as not to annoy anyone and not look ridiculous?

Perhaps the secret lies in the field of application of each individual word. If we eat, this is a daily and even routine process, which is nothing extraordinary. But when children are called to the table, they usually eat "eat". We can assume that we are talking about a kind of diminutive-caressing version of the more mundane "is".

Stylistic synonyms

These words refer to stylistic synonyms and are not fully interchangeable. Despite absolutely identical semantic content, it is necessary to understand - so all the same to eat or eat? How to speak and in what situations?

The peculiarity of stylistic synonyms is that they are used for emotional coloring of the expression in different cases. For example, the well-known expression "Eat served" may sound unnecessarily solemn or even pretentious, but this is a relevant case of the use of this word. If two businessmen, going to lunch, say "Let's go, we'll eat", this sounds strange and cuts the rumor. But the same phrase, addressed to a small child, most organically fits into the situation.

Is it right to say "eat"

"Butterfly-beauty, eat jam." A quote from Mukha-Tsokotukhi by Chukovsky illustrates the situation in which the word is used absolutely correctly. To eat or eat, how to speak correctly? If it is a question of inviting guests to a table, it will be appropriate to offer it to eat, not eat, and certainly not to eat.

Traditionally, a circle of people is defined, in relation to which it is not forbidden to apply this word. Guests can eat, including guests of the restaurant, children and women. Men can not eat, and this may even seem like discrimination. But to talk about themselves "I eat" can only small children or persons who want to emphasize their weakness, infantilism and trepidation.

How to speak more correctly, "let's go eat" or "let's go eat"? If you say this to a small child, then you can use the first option, but if the conversation is with an adult person, then the second one. If you feel patronizing and even paternal (or maternal) feelings toward the interlocutor, then the use of the phrase "let's eat" is stylistically and emotionally justified, but be prepared for the fact that this can hobble your counterpart.

Is it rough or natural?

Objections that can usually be heard from the fans of the word "eat" are usually in the alleged rude and earthy word "is." Does this sound so gross?

The process of eating food has many names of varying degrees of expressiveness, among them there are crude and frankly slang expressions. How to eat or eat properly? But you can still eat, rub, grind, chew, tread, hawat, champ, swallow, eat. And all these synonyms differ only in the degree of expression and stylistic relevance. So "there" is the most neutral option.

Food and food

Perhaps, the essence of the matter lies not in the eaters themselves, but in what lies in the plate? In fact, how does food differ from food? Both are food. However, a plate of buckwheat with a chop is more of a meal, but a delicacy served on a special occasion for dear guests, rather, a dish. Of course, this division is somewhat outdated, now borrowed foreign word "delicacy", it firmly took the place of "food" at the festive tables, covered with a white starched tablecloth.

Even at the beginning of the last century, some hundred years ago, it was the dishes that were served on the tables, and this included not only dishes, but also drinks. Hardly then, someone thought about the right way - eat or eat. However, after the October Revolution of 1917, war was declared to all noble and petty bourgeois. So when the Bolsheviks the people stopped eating and began to eat more prosaically.

Have a bite of tea

Now it is rather amusing to hear that someone was offered to bite off tea, coffee, or even vodka. "I drank a glass of vodka" - so they said that with apparent pleasure and even, perhaps, with a relish, drank the hot. We can assume that the stylistically close word is to "eat", eat or drink with pleasure.

Arguing about how to properly speak, "eat" or "eat", you can easily forget that many words in our vocabulary have retained a certain imprint of time. For example, quite a few recent reports that coffee can now be considered a middle-born noun served as a pretext for hot linguistic battles.

Emotional coloring of speech

The main claim to the word "eat" is that it often colors the context in obsequious and some kind of pleasing notes. In most cases, this is inappropriate, however, there are options when for the sake of emotional emphasis it is possible to go and not to such sacrifices. In disputes about how to properly speak, "eat" or "eat", an important nuance is completely missed. With the help of a lexicon, a person unconsciously draws his psychological portrait, signals to others how to perceive it.

Men, in order to emphasize their masculinity, try to exclude from the vocabulary of all the diminutive caresses, this is "lisping", unworthy of a real warrior. And how then will the harsh Viking, the hunter and the patriarch in general eat? Eat only children and light airy ladies, whose diet consists only of candied petals and honey dew. It is easy to understand that women who consider the word "is" too gross and somehow physiological, seek with the help of a lexicon to construct a mental image of the ideal representative of the beautiful half of humanity, namely a beautiful butterfly, who can eat jam with a thin silver spoon.

Nevertheless, even in the last century the phrase "I eat" from the mouth of an adult was considered ridiculous and inappropriate. Since this word shows respect to the guests, it turns out that the speaker expresses respect in his own address.

However, if in verbal speech the emotional coloring can be given only by intonation and facial expressions, without resorting to stylistic synonyms, the written speech is deprived of such an opportunity.

Text intonation and literary techniques

In fiction, stylistics requires close attention, especially if you need to emphasize the character's characteristics. When you understand how to properly say, "eat" or "eat", many forget that in addition to verbal speech, there are other ways of conveying information. Even in a letter, wanting to convey a caring intonation, it would be appropriate to ask, not how the addressee eats, but whether he eats well. Of course, you should not ask such a question to your boss or business partner, but a girlfriend is quite possible, even if she is a harsh and emancipated woman.

On the pages of the artwork with the help of the word "eat" you can form an intonation, which will sound in the mind of the reader. This helps to show the character more clearly. If the hero offers to devour, then it is unlikely that he will be perceived as a kind, courteous and alert person.

"Eat" or "eat", how to speak, write - depends on your goals and stylistic coloring of the information message transmitted in writing or verbally. This is the key to understanding the appropriateness of the choice of synonyms.
