Why is it necessary to replace the electricity meter in the apartment

Many people, having started repairs in the house or apartment, are faced with the fact that they simply need to replace the electricity meter. The reasons for this decision can be very different: from the desire to install a more modern model to the real need due to the failure of the old meter.

One of the characteristics of the counter is its accuracy class. Modern varieties are produced with a class of 1.0, and older versions are from 2.0 and even 2.5, most often single-phase modifications for household single-phase consumers. This parameter affects the accuracy of accounting for the consumed kilowatts, and that can upset those who wish to save dishonestly, both in one and the other direction.

Another important characteristic, which may require the replacement of an electricity meter, is the nominal current of the device. As you know, all the consumed power (current) passes through the metering device, and as the level of consumption of modern household electrical appliances is now significantly increased (it is enough to recall at least an automatic washing machine with its 2 kW), then the installed meter must correspond to the load. Old induction-type counters, sometimes called disk ones, were very popular in Soviet times (after all, they did not have a worthy alternative) and had a permissible current of 5 Amps. We can approximately assume that for a network with a voltage of 220 V, the current of 5 amperes corresponds to 1 kilowatt. Surprisingly, they easily withstand even a threefold excess of current, so often they can still be found in living quarters. Despite the efficiency, the replacement of an electric meter in an apartment or house in such a situation is simply necessary. In any case, the current of the meter should be no less than the average consumption for the apartment (an accurate calculation will help make the electrician).

New electric meters come in two types: electronic with a liquid crystal screen (quite convenient) and improved induction. The first type is more promising, as it does not have moving mechanical elements in its composition, correspondingly, it is absolutely noiseless.

It is believed that induction is more reliable. This is really so. However, if the electricity meter is replaced directly in the living room (not in the corridor), then the characteristic noise of the rotating disc can be heard later, which not everyone will like.

For any similar device, the rule is correct, according to which if less than two years have elapsed since the manufacture was made, and all accompanying documents and seals are not violated, the meter can be replaced without the need to carry out verification in the metrology of the Energy Supervision. Otherwise, the staff electrician will refuse to install such a device.

The electricity meter can be replaced both at the expense of the tenant's funds, and free of charge - by Oblenergo's services. If the meter is installed in an apartment, then, as a rule, its replacement is paid by the tenant. In case of placement on a staircase (outdoor) - it is considered the property of the energy sales service (there are many features, so this is not a rule).

Buying a metering device, it is necessary to give preference to models of domestic production - this will later save you from possible problems with warranty service. In addition, only certified models are allowed to be installed, which must be taken into account.

Seals should be intact, and the inner surface of the glass - without dust and other contaminants. Otherwise, it is better to refrain from buying.

A small council performing a replacement: you need to closely monitor the actions of the filler and, in the future, the inspectors. There were precedents when the top seal was unnoticed for the owner of the device, which led to fines and proceedings.
