Why do we need lingual braces?

First of all it should be noted that the so-called lingual braces came to modern dentistry relatively recently (about 30 years ago). Since then, this system has undergone some changes.

The first lingual braces were installed in one American model, which was shot for the popular male magazine Playboy. Due to the peculiarities of the profession, this young woman was not only interested in the brilliant smile, but also in the imperceptibility of the established system of teeth correction.

Over time, the population's need for "invisible" braces has gradually grown. Thus, in 1991, a specialized European Society for Lingual Orthodontics was established. Modern lingual braces are very different from their predecessors. Their dimensions in height were reduced to 1.5 millimeters, but the comfort with sock remained.

Lingual braces system today

At the moment, experts identify two models:

  1. Classic braces, where the fastening takes place on each tooth.
  2. Individual braces, when the system is developed for each patient personally (the founder is German dentist Dirk Wichmann).

Cost

It is important to note that the price for correction of teeth by using this system is several times greater than in traditional versions. On the other hand, a significant advantage of lingual braces is considered to be a relatively short period of habituation, since, as already noted above, their height is no more than 1/3 of the tooth. Noticeably faster is the process of treatment itself. The thing is that in this case the pressure on each tooth is stronger, and the force is directed extremely accurately. So, despite the high cost, many citizens of our country still resort to this method, because in a short period of time painlessly you can forget about serious defects and anomalies in the development of both jaws.

Lingual braces. Efficiency

The lingual braces are characterized by a number of advantages. This is lightness, invisibility, low level of injuries, and simple care. In addition, the metal from which the mechanisms are directly manufactured, as a rule, is hypoallergenic. The very shape of the plates is rounded, which again proves the relatively small probability of traumatizing the tongue. These small plates are attached to the teeth by using a special lubricant, which has fluoride in its composition. Consequently, in this case the probability of caries development is practically zero.

Manufacturing

The procedure itself, as a rule, takes no more than two months. At the first stage, the dentist must make a cast of the patient's jaw. Then a virtual model is developed on the computer, that is, how the braces will look. Lingual variants, it is worth noting, require more painstaking work, so they are calculated for each tooth separately. Then a wax model is created, which later becomes a kind of prototype for manufacturing the system. Today some specialized dental clinics order it abroad.
