What is interesting about the Theological Cemetery?

Although the pogosts by definition can not be interesting, the Theological Cemetery (St. Petersburg) is still worth a visit. At least for the reason that there are buried a large number of famous people. Of course, this excursion will not give you a sea of positive emotions, but you will learn many interesting facts.

The theological cemetery has existed since the 18th century in the Kalininsky district. Initially, people who died in a nearby hospital (military-land) were buried there, but after a while the victims of cholera were buried there, which in those days was still poorly studied by doctors, and therefore took many lives. The theological cemetery was located on the territory of the church of St. John the Theologian (in fact, therefore it was so named), which in 1788 it was decided to disassemble.

Over time, the land here began to be actively populated. The population grew rapidly, and with the birth rate, mortality increased. The Theological Cemetery also expanded. Therefore, the authorities decided to build a new one - 2.5 kilometers from the old one. Here, the church of John the Theologian, once dismantled (at the beginning of the last century), was rebuilt.

Now the cemetery is well-groomed: here was made gardening and made asphalt paths. However, it was hard for these places during the Soviet era, and especially during the Second World War. Everyone knows how destructive the period of the siege of Leningrad was. As a result of military actions and a shortage of fuel, most of the wooden crosses were burnt. And after the war, there were cases when the Bogoslovsky cemetery was plundered by marauders. In spite of the fact that much here was plundered and destroyed, several common graves were preserved with the victims of the blockade. According to official data, in 1942, 60,000 people were buried in just a few days in the cemetery, which was decided to be used as a common grave, as a result of famine, cold and shelling. These sad figures are not only statistics, but also a real picture of all the horrors of the war.

Today, the Theological Cemetery (St. Petersburg) is the place where burial places are located, mainly related to the second half of the 20th century and, of course, to the military and post-war periods. In addition, there is a large number of famous writers, scientists, artists, military and athletes. This is the children's writer Bianchi, and the famous storyteller Schwartz, and conductor Mravinsky, and the hero of the Great Patriotic War Marinesko.

For many, the name of the cemetery is associated with the name of the rock musician Viktor Tsoi, who crashed in a car in 1990. His grave can be easily found: this place is frequented by fans.

If you decide to get to the site yourself, it's wise to first figure out how to do it better. There are two simple ways:

  • First you need to get to the station "Ploshad Muzhestva", and from there - on the 123rd bus to the street. Butlerova.
