Radagast is a character of the works of John Ronald Ruel Tolkien. The full name of this sorcerer is Radagast the Brown. He is one of the magicians - members of the White Council. The main difference from other wizards is a detailed knowledge of the habits of animals and birds inhabiting Middle Earth.

The appearance of the Brown Magician

Funny old man, riding on a rabbit harnessed in sledges and dealing with the treatment of sick hedgehogs, of course, was not taken seriously by the White magician. Despite the fact that the character Radagast appeared in Middle-earth for a long time. As the historical Chronicle, narrated by Tolkien, says, it happened approximately in the year 1000 of 3 epochs. Valie Yavanna with her influence convinced Saruman to treat Brown as an equivalent magician. But the peculiar image of the inhabitant of forests and the patron of all living beings was very contrary to her words.

The dismissive attitude of the White Elder did not become the reason that two good wizards soon became friends. Thus, Radagast in the book about the journey of Bilbo Beggins with the gnomes appears not only as a friend. The author calls him Gendalph Gray's cousin.

Radagast is a character in Tolkien's works of an earlier age. He appears in the book The Silmarillion. Here he gives Saruman help in opposing Sauron. With his help, birds were used as observers for the latter's actions.

Fatal mistake wizard

One of the significant drawbacks that Radagast was endowed with is his disparaging attitude towards the political games taking place next to him. Living in Rosgobel near the southern outskirts of Liholsye, he did not go into the affairs that are taking place in the White Council.

This was the reason that he did not know about Saraman's betrayal. In the summer of 3018, when he met Radagast the Brown one, he ordered to find Gandalf and inform him that Nazgul who were searching for the Shire were seen in the sky. Accordingly, if the Gray magician will be interested in this news, he must come to Eisengard. A little later, due to existing circumstances, Saruman slightly corrected the conditions and with the help of an uninformed Radagasta still lured the magician into a trap.

Thus, without knowing it himself, he led Gandalf Gray into a trap arranged in the tower Orthank. But in support of the fact that Bury did not leave his relative, he sent to the top of the eagle. The purpose of the bird was to report the movement of dark forces. Clever Gvaygir, after seeing the prisoner on the top of Gandalf, took him to his mighty back and carried him to a safe distance. Escape Saruman noticed not at once.

As the author himself explained, Radagast - a character who is fond of flora and fauna, it was this that provoked the failure of the task entrusted to him - control over Sauron. But still this error is not perceived as much as the betrayal of Saruman, thereby allowing his return to the Immortal Earth.

The character Radagast first appeared on the screen only in the second trilogy, shot by Peter Jackson. In "The Lord of the Rings" his image was presented as a lunar moth, through which Gandalf the Gray sent a message about help (in the book it happened a little in a different scenario).

As a real character, Brown appears in the first part of the trilogy "Unexpected Journey". He is presented to the audience as a powerful magician, able to withstand the dark forces, which can easily drive away from his house huge evil spiders descending to the edge of the forest.

The role of the magician in the works of Tolkien and Jackson

Despite the fact that Radagast is a character who looks a bit silly and funny, he is a serious magician. It was he who first noticed the presence of the Necromancer in Dol-Guldur and notified Gendalph Gray about it. The strength and power of his magical powers is confirmed by the fact that in battle with the King the sorcerer, with the help of his wooden staff, knocks the sword out of his hands. A unique wagon with harnessed rabbits of a giant breed can not be overtaken even by wargis, famous for their speed.

However, all this does not have an effect on Saruman. In his eyes, Radagast is a humorous character, which should not be taken seriously. He tries to ignore all the messages received from the Brown Magician, explaining that the eccentric has overeaten the mushrooms causing hallucinations.

Where did he go next?

Of all the five sorcerers placed in Middle-earth to control the forces of darkness, only one Gandalf, who later became White, that is, the main one, remained faithful to his task to the end. The character Radagast after a little interference in the confrontation between good and evil disappears from the field of vision and the plot as a whole.

There was one more mention of him later. When, at the conclusion of the council of Elrond, it was decided to bring together all the allies. The messenger, sent for him, came with the news that the mage had not been in place for a long time. The author did not give readers reliable information about where the brown wizard was hiding, he only said that something had happened to him.
