Pruning roses - an important event in the life of flowers

Roses are royal flowers, one of the plants most loved by gardeners. And one of the most important agrotechnical measures when caring for them is pruning roses. After all, timely and correct pruning depends on:

  • Maximum ornamentality of bushes;
  • Durability of the bush;
  • Abundance of flowers;
  • Resistance to disease and winter hardiness;
  • Achievement of optimal productivity, which is inherent in every variety;
  • Quality of the cut material.

It is necessary to prune the bushes to give them a shape, but also for the flowering of roses to be more lush and beautiful.

Be sure to prepare plants for the winter frosty period (pruning roses), so that in the spring and summer they delight you with their charming flowering.

It is accepted to cover roses for the winter, but before that they need to be cut. Such an autumn pruning of roses will not only facilitate the safe shelter of bushes, but even help the flowers with the maximum comfort to overwinter, without freezing. This procedure strengthens the plant well, provides excellent ventilation for the crowns, and also gives light access to the buds and leaves. Pruning roses in the fall allows flowers to grow faster in the future. Thus, in each bush in summer you can count up to eighty flowers.

Pruning roses is carried out only with sharp garden knives or pruners. The cut should be done 5 mm above the good kidney with a slight inclination from it. Gardeners cut the shoots always to healthy wood.

Trim correctly on the kidney, which is located on the outside of the shoot itself, so as not to overshadow an important part - the center of the bush. In strong plants, after cutting from the second kidney, 2-3 shoots can grow. But it's right to leave only one, and delete the rest. All weak, intersecting, sick, thin, dead shoots must be cut to healthy wood or soil level. On the bush leave just as many shoots as necessary for good lighting and air exchange bush.

As a rule, they do this at the end of October. For a start, remove all the remaining soft shoots, damaged (or diseased) branches and leaves and flowers. On the bushes leave only 3-5 of the strongest and young shoots, which grow evenly. Others cut out. All left shoots must be shortened.

There are 3 main ways to cut roses for the winter, the choice depends on the growth intensity and the size of the bush.

Short pruning. With this method, the shoots are removed completely, leaving only the base of the bush with 2-3 buds. This method should be used in extreme cases, because the plant can greatly weaken and not even overwinter.

Average pruning. Bushes are cut to about half, up to 35 cm above the ground, and at the base leave 6 or 7 kidneys. This method is the most effective of all.

Long pruning. If the rose has flower buds that are located at the top of the shoots, then they are never cut off, or they cut very slightly. At the given method at the basis it turns out not less than 10 kidneys. Each shoot is cut to healthy white wood.

During the pre-winter (autumn) pruning of royal flowers, there are often questions about what shoots are considered old. As a rule, modern roses develop in such a way that three-year-old shoots are considered old. They look too thick, stiff, contain a large number of lateral branches. The bark looks a little dried up, which means that the internal vessels can not supply the plant properly with nutrients and water. Do not create conditions for rapid aging of roses. From such shoots it is necessary to get rid in time.

In principle, pruning roses is not an easy task, but it is very important to take into account the size of the plant and the specific characteristics of its growth.
