Richard Adams: Biography

The future writer was born on May 9, 1920 in the south of England, in Bershkire. From 1926 to 1933, Richard attended a local school. In 1933, he entered the college, where he gnawed the granite of science diligently for five years. And in 1938, Richard first visited the legendary University of Oxford, where he listened to lectures on history. The educational institution made a great impression on the young writer. In 1940, shortly after the declaration of war between Britain and Germany, Adams was called to serve in the British Army. There he joins the RASC (a special unit responsible for transport communications) and works as a communications officer. Richard Adams during his time in Palestine, Europe and even in the Far East. Nevertheless, he did not take part in hostilities against Japan and Germany.

Career

The writer returned home only in 1946. He decided to continue his studies, and already in 1948 Adams goes to Oxford. There he studies modern history and literature. Richard has made great strides in terms of study. Already in 1948 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree, and five years later - a master's degree. In addition, in 1948, in parallel with his studies, he received the post of an official in the local ministry of administration Richard Adams. The writer holds this post until 1974. After the release of his bestsellers, Richard resigns and decides to become a professional writer. He moved to the Isle of Man (since there the most pleasant taxation conditions), where he continues to create to this day.

"The inhabitants of the hills" - this is the first and most successful work of Richard. The novel is a heroic fantasy, which tells the reader about the incredible adventures of a group of brave rabbits. This book is one of the best examples of children's literature. And this is not surprising: the author opens for the reader a huge and amazing world with unusual, but nonetheless attractive characters. Adams very organically combines fiction with reality, which gives the book additional charm. For example, in the work there are real rabbit habits, which, despite their realism, are very sweet and funny. Among other things, it pleases that every character in the work is a person. Each hero has his own character and clear motivation.

History of creation

The basis of the "Inhabitants of the Hills" was the story that Richard told his daughters during a long car journey. The writer, in order to entertain children, began to improvise and on the run came up with a story. As the main characters, he took a group of charming rabbits. The story was based on the story of his life, which occurred in 1944 during the battle for Osterbeck (Holland). The story really liked the children, it is for this reason that Richard decided to transfer his work to paper and publish a book dedicated to his daughters.

Richard Adams was faced with certain problems when publishing his creation. In 1972, thirteen publishers refused to print the novel. Nevertheless, Richard did not give up his idea and found a publisher in the person of the company Rex Collings. And, as it turned out, not in vain. The book "The Inhabitants of the Hills" became a real bestseller and brought to its creator a whole lot of money. Moreover, the novel received a lot of different awards. One of them is the Carnegie Medal, which is the most prestigious and ancient literary prize in England.
