There are also small ethnic groups, numbering about 50 thousand people. The list of regions equated to the regions of the Far North is large. It covers the settlements of most of the territory of the north of Russia. In addition to the indigenous population, people of different nationalities live and work here.

Indigenous people

The endless expanses of the tundra are inhabited by the most enduring and strong peoples of the North. The Chukchi, the Eskimos, the Koryaks, the Aleuts, the Nenets, the Evenki, the Sami, the Nganasans have been living and working here for a long time. There are no more than 300,000 people left.

On the peninsula of Alaska along the Yukon River , Eskimos live. Previously, they lived in warmer southern latitudes, but were gradually ousted by the Indian tribes to the very edge of the Earth.

In the Russian tundra, the Nenets, Chukchi, Saami, Eskimos, Nanais, Koryaks, Evenks and other small peoples live, trying to preserve their traditional crafts and facilities. Most of them lead a nomadic and semi-nomadic way of life.

Features of local residents

The Chukchi belong to the race of the Mongols (the Arctic variety). Their native language is Chukchi. It is gradually lost, being replaced by Russians. The experience of their ancestors taught these people to make comfortable items for life - yarangi (clothes suitable for sleeping right on the snow) and torbasy boots (light and very warm from the kamus). The same ancestors taught the Chukchi not to wash. For what? In these areas, there are many ultraviolet rays, and a layer of fat on the skin helps protect the face from dangerous burns, so they rarely wash. The life of these people does not seem without deer. They are their food, home, clothing, vehicle.

The traditional dwelling of the indigenous inhabitants of the most northerly regions of Russia is the plague, built of reindeer skins. The Eskimos also have a dwelling of snow - an igloo.

Provision of northerners with pensions

Citizens of the Far North (localities equivalent to them), regardless of their place of residence, are entitled:

• early retirement for old age;

• to increase the old-age pension, loss of breadwinner and disability.

Men have the right to early retirement at 55, and women in 50 years, provided they have worked for 15 years in the Far North or at least 20 years in the equated localities (the list of regions equated to the regions of the Far North is attached above).

They also have the right to early retirement pensions and women in the age of 50, who by this time gave birth to two or more children, under certain conditions for length of service.

Housing, relocation

Resettlement from the Far North is carried out under the Program of Granting Subsidies for the Acquisition of Housing by Citizens Departing from These Areas. This is regulated by the laws:

• Federal Law No. 125 of 25 October 2002;

• Federal Law of the Russian Federation of July 17, 2011, No. 212.

They provide for the conditions for granting subsidies and the procedure for determining their size for the purchase of living quarters by employees of the Far North.

Resettlement from the Far North is carried out systematically according to the State Program.

The above list of regions equated to the Far North demonstrates Russia's great potential to use as a springboard these lands for various experiments. Behind the inaccessibility of these regions are huge potentials due to the huge areas of land and their wealth.
