Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham ("Staying Alive")

Revising a variety of series, in addition to the main story, you can always notice the presence in the movie of a certain secondary meaning. At the same time, by signs deliberately left by the filmmakers, one can only partially grasp the essence. And these very signs can be different, for example, the names and surnames of famous personalities. For example, in the most notorious fantastic series called "Staying Alive" or "Lost" is very often mentioned by Jeremy Bentham. Who is it? How does he relate to the plot of the film? And in what season is it mentioned?

A few words about the series

"Staying alive" is a well-known Robinsonade, as well as a popular dramatic and simultaneously mystical series. It consists of only 6 seasons, in each of which the crashed passengers are fighting for their lives. In one of them there is a certain Jeremy Bentham.

According to the plot of the series, passengers flew on a snow-white liner through Sydney in the US. However, the unforeseen happened, and the plane fell on one of the most mysterious and frightening islands in the endless waters of Oceania. Throughout the series tells about the fate of each of the participants in the flight, about his past and future life. The series is replete with mysterious and chilling scenes, and also contains elements of drama and romance.

In which season did Jeremy show up?

Jeremy Bentham was first mentioned in the seventh episode of the fifth season, as well as in the 93rd series, which was released on television screens in February 2009. The series, which deals with this character, tells about the life and death of Jeremy Bentham and has a similar name.

So, in the center of the plot of this series before us appears John or Jonathan Locke, later received the pseudonym of Jeremy Bentham. Recall that this is one of the key characters who survived the crash of the aircraft (flight "Oceanic-815"). According to the idea of the authors, initially this man was paralyzed and could not move independently. However, after getting him on the island, the motor functions were fully restored. As a result, he was able to walk fully without anybody's help and even felt a kind of mystical connection between him and the mysterious island.

A Brief History of the Destiny of Locke on the Island

John Locke, who is also Jeremy Bentham, was an unbeatable hunter. For the same reason, he was engaged in the production of food in the camp, which was broken by surviving passengers on the shore of the island. As it turned out, this is a chaotic and contradictory personality with the bright qualities of the leader. However, this did not prevent him from partially betraying his charges and to shift to the side of the so-called Other (local residents who arrived to the island much earlier). It was he who was involved in various kinds of events, for example, which led to the explosion of two "Flame" and "Swan" stations, as well as the deaths of several people.

Briefly about the plot of the series, where he meets Jeremy Bentham ("Lost")

According to the story, John Locke is in Tunisia. It is there that our hero is redirected after he turned the coveted wheel of time. He comes to himself and sees that he lies on the asphalt, and around him a mass of surveillance cameras. Because of a broken leg, it's hard for him to get up, and he desperately starts calling for help. At his call the driver of the pick-up truck, loaded to the eyeball by unfamiliar people, responds. They lift the victim and carefully put him in the body.

So John Locke or, as it is called here, Jeremy Bentham (his biography will be described below) gets to the hospital. During procedures with straightening of a leg the hero from a pain loses consciousness.

After he comes to himself, he encounters the former leader of the Others and a fairly wealthy businessman Charles Widmore. It is this money-bag that tells the hero about their long-standing acquaintance that occurred 50 years ago. In this case, John himself is sure that this meeting occurred only a couple of days ago, and not when he was only 17 years old.

He convinces John of having common goals and offers to return to the island, having previously tracked down six people, who not so long ago managed to leave this ill-fated place of wreck. As proof of his intentions, the rich man gives money to the stunned John, a file of all six lucky people and documents to the name of Jeremy Bentham. According to Charles, this pseudonym he chose because John's parents named him after the philosopher, and Bentham also had similar interests.

The search for six people

In search of six people who escaped from the island, John spends a lot of time and energy. However, all his persuasion to return does not lead to the desired result. Other heroes do not want to hear anything about the island, much less about returning there. Having lost all hope of realization of the conceived, John decides to settle scores with life through hanging. To him comes the current leader of the Others. However, after disclosing certain information, he chokes Locke by himself and leaves the scene of the crime.

Incredibly, the deceased Jeremy Bentham ("Staying Alive" - one of the series, which mentions the name of this philosopher) survives and again gets to an island where no one remembers him. The very same hero knows everything. Later, he understands how he got on the plane, and what was the reason for his return from the dead ...

The cult personality of Jeremy

As we casually mentioned, the name of Jeremy fell into the script of the series not by chance. This is a very real man, born in February 1748 in London. His father was the then famous lawyer Samuel Bentham. Like his father, the young philosopher also received an education in Oxford. Later, he graduated from Westminster School, Queens College and Lincoln's Inn (an educational institution where he taught law and other legal disciplines).

At one time, this philosopher developed a unique plan for the prison building, which he called the "Panopticon." This building was a kind of cylindrical structure, equipped with internal glass partitions.

At the same time the jailer was in the center. He could follow all the prisoners, who, in turn, could not see him. And since prisoners know that they are being watched, but do not assume when exactly this is happening, they try to behave themselves appropriately always. Thus, they easily turn into ideal prisoners who do not violate order. By the way, something similar applies to the inhabitants of the island. They know about the observation and begin to behave as the observer needs.

Jeremiah Bentham died when he turned 84 years old. However, he was not buried. On the contrary, during his lifetime he bequeathed his body to science. Therefore, after his death, the skeleton of Jeremy Bentham was dressed in a suit and covered with a special wax mask. At the moment he is still at University College London.
