How to make wood cutters with your own hands?

Cutters on wood are a necessary tool for any carver. However, the quality of the shop cutters often leaves much to be desired, so if you are planning to seriously cut wood, then you should make wood cutters yourself.

Cutters for wood from band saw

How to make a wood cutter with your own hands from a band saw? In fact, this is not so difficult, although such sharp edges are sharpened very well. For work you will need:

  • Oak trim for the handles.
  • Electric sharpener.
  • Hacksaw.
  • Belt sanding machine.
  • Grinding skins of different granularity.
  • Actually the blade from the band saw.
  • Respirator to protect the respiratory system.
  • Joiner glue.

Blade making

If you plan to make wood cutters with your own hands, then you will need a piece of saw blade about 8 centimeters long. Of these, 4.5-5 centimeters should be left on the shank, which will be attached to the handle. With the help of an electric grinder, the shape of a future knife is cut from the blade. The master defines the form itself according to the requirements. Then, on the belt sanding machine, the shape should be sharpened, making for it a large facet with an angle of 10-15 degrees. This narrowing from the butt to the cutting edge is necessary in order for the cutter to work. The cutting edge with an angle of 25-30 degrees, which will participate in the cutting process, is created later.

Do this work slowly, otherwise the metal will heat up, become soft and stop grinding. Sometimes the workpiece can be cooled in water.

Manufacturing of the handle

To make hammers for such items as the cutters of the machine, you need to give your tree its own form. For ovens suitable oak bars in length about 12 centimeters and section 12x22 millimeters.

Then you need to do the following:

  1. Tail the metal workpiece over the edges to get burrs.
  2. Applying the tail to the bar, draw the shape of the handle.
  3. Chisels choose wood to a depth identical to the thickness of the workpiece. Periodically, the workpiece must be tried on, applying the second block on top. The fovea should not be too deep or too shallow - in the first case the blade will stagger, and in the second - the handle will simply crack or not stick together.
  4. After you are convinced that all the parts are perfectly suited to each other, they can be glued together. The glue must be applied to the nest and to the surface of the bar. The second part of the adhesive can be applied less.
  5. After you connect the parts as accurately as possible and tighten them with clamps. It needs to be done strongly, but not to split the bars.
  6. Remove excess glue with a damp cloth and leave to dry for about 12 hours.

After that, the design density should be checked - grasp one hand by the handle, and the second try to loosen the blade. If you hear the characteristic squeaks, then the work will have to be redone. Do not be lazy - if the hand cutters on the tree with your hands are poorly made, the blade will quickly loosen up and may eventually lead to injury.

Handle fit

Cutters on wood with their own hands are good because the shape of the handle you can give yourself, as you like. Although some general rules should be adhered to:

  • Keep the back part round and wide, much wider than the one nearest the blade. Therefore, it is better to make preforms of handles in the form of an elongated truncated pyramid.
  • Be sure to make a notch under the index finger on the handle.

The edges of the handle can be grinded with a grinder. This must be done in a respirator and safety glasses, so as not to damage the organs of vision and breathing. Turn the handle roughly, and then manually treat it with a fine sandpaper. Then, if desired, paint the handle and be sure to treat it with varnish.

Creating a tool from a milling cutter for metal

The cutter can also be made from a milling cutter for metal - it is extremely durable and made of carbon steel, so your cutter will remain sharp for a long time and will become dulled very soon.

Perform the work to make cutters on wood with their own hands, you need in the following order:

  1. Apply the cutter pattern that you wish to receive to the cutter. Cutters are especially popular with the knife-jamb. The shank must be made longer than the blade.
  2. Using a metal cutter, cut the cutter exactly according to the drawing. So you get a knife blank.
  3. Sand the blade, sometimes dipping it into cold water.
  4. Make a handle of solid wood from two halves. In one half, cut the groove for the workpiece. Glue all with PVA glue and grind the handle.

As you can see, the answer to the question: "How do you make a wood cutter with your own hands?" - it is simple enough and practically does not demand from you any special skills.

Sharpening the incisors on the tree with hands after manufacturing

After you make a blank blade, you will need to make a small chamfer - the immediate cutting edge of the blade with an angle of sharpening around 25-30 degrees. The angle of sharpening at 10-15 degrees is not enough for you, because the blade when cutting even a soft tree will eventually be broken and crushed.

A small facet can be formed by grinding a skin or a bar. You need to go from the smaller to the larger - first take a peel with a grain size of about 240, and when the chamfer is formed, bring it with pelts to 800, and then 1000 grit. After you can polish the blade on a leather belt with GOI paste.

Sharpening test

Sharpening of the tool should be checked. If it is sharpened correctly, even the hardest wood will be easily cut not only along, but also across the fibers. Also sharpness should be checked on a soft tree, having looked, that the cut was brilliant and equal, as though "oil". For this check, for example, a pine is suitable, which is very easy to get.

Sharpening if the blade is dulled

Over time, your knife, of course, will be blunt. Then it can be sharpened with a sanding cloth, and then also polished on the reverse side of a leather belt with GOI paste.
