How to disable autorun

In order to disable autorun, you must first understand what it is and what it serves. When connecting removable media to a computer, the operating system conducts their preliminary reading to determine the contents. Based on the results of processing this information, Windows offers the user a choice of several programs to work with the data that it found on the connected drive. This procedure is called autostart. In addition to obvious usefulness, this function can also be accompanied by negative moments.

The main reason why the autorun is often disconnected is the vulnerability of the system to virus programs. "Victim" of a virus attack is the system file "autorun.exe". Most protection programs correctly determine the occurrence of this dangerous situation, however, the user does not always have time to respond to warning messages and prevent the virus from entering your computer.

Sometimes disabling autorun is done in order to save time and resources of the computer, which are spent on reading media. This procedure can be quite long in those cases when the drive contains large amounts of information or a lot of different files.

In different versions of Windows, disabling autorun occurs in different ways. For example, in Windows XP there is only one way to do this, which involves editing the system registry. In Windows 7 and newer versions of the system, a special section appears in the control panel of the computer, which is responsible for the operation of this function.

In order to disable the autorun of Windows XP, you must open the system registry . To do this, go to the "Start" menu and click "Run". A small "Select a program" window opens, where you should type gpedit.msc. Confirming your actions by pressing the "Ok" key, the user will get access to the "Group Policy" section.

Then select "Computer Configuration", "Administrative Templates". Having opened there the "System" directory, the user can see the service in the right half of the window, which is called "Disable Autorun". Pressing the right button will bring up its properties, where you should activate the "Enabled" option and select "All drives" from the drop-down list. If you want, you can disable only autorun disks through the optical drive, and for usb-connections leave it turned on.

Disabling Windows 7 autorun can be done in a similar way, however, a simpler method is also provided in this system. Opening the "Start", "Control Panel", "All items ...", the user can see the "Autostart" section. Double-click to open the window in which you want to find the field "Use autostart for all ..." and clear the flag that indicates the activity of this function. The result of the actions must be saved.

As a result of these simple actions, you can significantly improve the security level of your PC by complicating the penetration of viruses into the system.
