When there was an optical drive and whether it is necessary for modern users

Tell me, do you know a lot of technologies that are in high demand in the recent past, but are rapidly losing their popularity today? We think that such examples are known to each of you! One of the most striking cases of such oblivion is the optical drive, which to this day is practically not used by a large number of users.

Many people think that these drives appeared not earlier than the mid-1990s, but this statement is true only for our country. The initial prerequisite for their creation was the research of Russian scientists in the 60s, when the concept of a "cold laser" was first put forward. The first drives appeared in the 70's (!) Years of the last century, and simultaneously the mass of their various modifications (the so-called "books") was developed. However, pretty soon they forgot about it even their producers.

Until recently, a quality optical drive was a welcome guest in every computer. More precisely, the guest is vital, because in conditions of the disastrous state of the Internet in those days, installation of programs and watching movies was possible only with its help. Flash drives were not there then, and their first representatives (which appeared a long time ago) were distinguished by microscopic volumes and incredible cost.

But in recent years, an increasing number of users in their mass refuses to "optics", perfectly bypassing flash cards and network storage. A considerable number of younger users are already surprised to ask what the optical drive is, since they practically did not keep the "blanks".

That's why a considerable part of the buyers do not even remember when the computer is assembled about the drive itself. Either remembers only with the next bout of longing for the old days. But is the absence of this device in computers and laptops justified? Let's try to figure it out ...

So, if you just play games, sit in social networks and watch movies (again on the network), then you optical drive is clearly of no use. Let's look at the situation from the other side. Suppose you are an amateur photographer who needs to keep the most valuable pictures from time to time. What are you going to do? Every time buy bulky hard drives? It is better to store information in the "cloud", since the reliability of hard drives has long been questioned.

But what if you want to transfer pictures to the client in digital form? To buy each time a flash drive is expensive enough, and not always there is an opportunity to buy them, while the blanks can be found in almost every trading network around the clock. In this case, the solution can be an external optical drive, connected to the computer if necessary.

In addition, their reliability can serve as a plus in favor of standard optical disks . In any case, in 6 years the CD-disk will be in a normal state, which can not be said about an ordinary hard drive, which can "die" after a couple of months.

In a word, the optical drive is still quite a useful and useful thing that can help out at a difficult moment!
