CPU replacement. Procedure

Everyone, even the most conservative owner of a personal computer, sooner or later asks about how to update the computer. Bought only two or three years ago, it is already hopelessly outdated, especially in light of the existence of inexpensive modern alternatives. Changing the whole system block is not all solved, the more simple replacement of the processor often gives the opportunity to "breathe a second life." With due care, you can do it yourself.

The processor replacement begins with reading the instructions to the motherboard used (motherboard, mainboard). Now there are two main manufacturers of CPUs - Intel and AMD. Their products are incompatible with each other neither electrically, nor according to the configuration of the legs-terminals. In addition, even from the same manufacturer, different generations of processors can radically differ.

The replacement of the processor implies understanding the meaning of the word "socket". Physically, the CPU is a microcircuit. There are two ways to connect it to the motherboard:

- Classic, when a lot of thin copper pins are soldered on one side of the CPU. The chip is inserted by these pins into a special socket (socket) on the motherboard. This method is followed by AMD;

- A completely different approach is chosen in Intel. The pins are soldered in the connector itself, and on the CPU chip there are only copper pads.

On this basis, you can immediately identify the manufacturer, but much more important than the features of the installation, as will be noted later.

Let's sum up: who decided to increase the speed of his computer and learns information on the topic "processor replacement", should look in the instructions to the motherboard in the "CPU" section and find out the list of supported processors. Will only go to the store and purchase the desired processor from the list.

The choice should be based on the frequency and number of cores. And the latter gives a more significant performance gain in modern applications.

The replacement of the processor in the laptop and computer is similar. The difference is that the laptop needs to dismantle the entire internal cooling system.

Consider the replacement order in the personal computer. Here is a new processor purchased. First, you need to remove the motherboard from the case. With enough experience, you can replace the CPU directly in the system unit, but beginners should not do so.

We disconnect all the wires from the system unit, lift it to the table to the light, lay it sideways and remove the housing cover. Now take out the expansion cards. The task: to release the motherboard and remove it from the case. We remember where it was!

On the motherboard there is a cooling system with a processor under it and memory modules (they do not interfere). Dismantle the cooling. If it is full-time, then a screwdriver is not required. It is usually necessary to turn the plastic (s) lock and remove the entire structure. All retaining locks are always in sight, so we do everything carefully. The radiator does not shake in the sides (especially for the LGA socket), but pull only upwards. The processor is held in the connector by the clamping lever. Unlock it and take your fingers on the two sides of the CPU, take it out. Do not touch the contacts and do not put metal on!

We take a new processor and place it in the connector. You need to be very careful when working with LGA and do not apply any effort. On the CPU case there is a key label indicating the orientation in the connector. Also, many CPU models have a special form that does not allow inserting them into the connector incorrectly. The instructions to the processor always specify the installation method (the socket key must match the key on the CPU). We check that the processor is placed without distortions, and fix it by turning the clamping lever. If there is no thermal paste on the bottom side of the radiator, then we put it on the processor cover. If it is available (all modern models are just such) it remains to place the cooling system. The assembly is carried out in the reverse order with respect to disassembly.
