Catalyst ("Priora"): description, characteristics and reviews

The design of the exhaust system for all modern cars requires the presence of a catalytic converter (catalyst). This is a prerequisite for the implementation of environmental standards.

VAZ-2170 is no exception. Its exhaust system is also equipped with a catalyst. About him and will be discussed in this article. «Лада-Приора»), а также поговорим о проблемах, возникающих при его неисправности. We will look at how the catalyst ( "Lada-Priora") is arranged, and also we will talk about the problems that arise in the event of a malfunction. In addition, we will try to deal with alternative devices used to replace it.

Why you need a catalyst

The catalytic converter is an element of the exhaust system used to reduce the amount of harmful impurities (carbon oxides, nitrogen, unburned hydrocarbon compounds) in the exhausts. This is achieved by their afterburning inside the device due to the high temperature and the presence of oxygen in the gases.

Design Features

How is the catalyst arranged ? в смысле ее конструкции ничем не отличается от других современных машин. "Priora" in the sense of its design does not differ from other modern machines. The part consists of a steel casing (cans) and a working element - metal honeycombs, the surface of which is covered with an active substance that promotes the heating of exhausts. The latter is a platinum-iridium alloy.

Unburned harmful impurities, passing through the honeycombs of the device, settle on the surface of the catalytic layer and, under the influence of high temperature, continue to burn, oxidizing almost to the end. As a result, at the output we have an exhaust with a minimum amount of harmful substances.

Location:

также неоригинальна. In terms of where the catalyst is located , Priora is also unoriginal. It is immediately behind the exhaust manifold, directly on the intake pipe. You will see it if you look at the back of the engine. In other cars, it may be behind the intake pipe.

Symptoms of the catalytic converter

The declared resource of the VAZ-2170 catalyst is 140 thousand km. However, this does not mean that after this kilometer, the device needs to be changed. It can serve much longer, or it may come out of service after 10 thousand km. It all depends on how you operate the car.

How can you understand that it's time to change the catalyst? , будучи автомобилем, напичканным различными датчиками, в первую очередь даст вам об этом знать горящей лампочкой CHECK на приборной панели (при считывании кода ошибка 0420). "Priora" , being a car stuffed with different sensors, first of all will let you know about it with a burning CHECK light bulb on the dashboard (when reading the code error 0420). The failure of the catalytic converter is also accompanied by:

  • A difficult (long-term) process of starting the engine;
  • A decrease in power characteristics;
  • Increased fuel consumption;
  • Floating idling speed;
  • Uncharacteristic sounds of a running motor;
  • Sharp (acrid) odor of exhaust gases.

Start with the sensor

Having noticed the above signs, do not despair at once. The fault is that the car has lost its former playfulness, maybe an out-of-order oxygen sensor (lambda probe). By the way, they have "Priora" two: the manager and the diagnostic. The first is designed to determine the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gases, and the second - in order to timely inform the driver of a possible malfunction of the first device.

и каких именно. Often, these sensors are called other people's names, for example, asking how many catalysts in the "Prior" and which ones. This is fundamentally wrong. The catalyst is one, the sensors are two. Let's return to them.

Given that the diagnostic lambda probe is extremely rare, first check the catalyst control sensor. в случае его поломки также оповестит вас горящей лампой CHECK. "Priora" in case of failure will also notify you of a burning CHECK lamp. It remains only to read the error code of the scanner and decrypt it. If it turns out that there was a problem with the lambda probe, you were lucky.

How to check the catalyst

The catalytic converter can be tested in two ways: visually inspecting it and measuring the pressure inside the can. In the first case, the device is dismantled and its visual examination is carried out. If the body of the device has traces of mechanical impact, and the honeycombs seen through the holes are fused, the catalyst is uniquely faulty.

The pressure inside the device can be checked using a special manometer screwed in instead of the control sensor. The engine is started, heated and adjusted to 3 thousand rpm. If the catalyst is working, the pressure should not rise above 0.3 kgf / cm 2 .

Why does the catalyst fail

The main malfunction of the catalytic converter is the obstruction of the honeycomb. Over time, their working layer burns, and they start to melt, turning into a solid mass. This creates an obstacle to the free exit of exhaust gases, which is why, in fact, the engine is "choked".

Premature failure of the catalyst can be provoked:

  • Use of poor-quality fuel;
  • Ingress of fuel oil;
  • Disturbances in the ignition system.

How much is the catalyst for Prioru

The catalyst can not be repaired or repaired. It can only be replaced. If you want to buy a new device, it will cost you about 5-6 thousand rubles, which is not very cheap. , несомненно, оживет, вот только надолго ли его хватит? Having received a new catalyst, Priora will undoubtedly come to life, but will it last long?

Yes, and in no case do not buy a neutralizer, used. Who knows how much it has worked and why it is sold.

We change the catalyst on the "Prior" with our own hands

In order to replace the VAZ-2170 catalytic converter, it is not necessary to contact the service station. This can be done in the conditions of own garage. This will require:

  • a set of keys;
  • Head 13 with handle;
  • Pliers;
  • Slotted screwdriver.

осуществляется следующим образом: The replacement of the catalyst ("Priora") is carried out as follows:

  1. We install the machine on the inspection pit.
  2. Raise the hood, turn off the negative terminal on the battery.
  3. We remove the decorative cover of the power unit.
  4. We pass into the observation pit. We unscrew (not to the end) the lower nut of the yoke connecting the main and additional mufflers. We unscrew the upper nut completely. Remove the clamp and remove the O-ring.
  5. Pliers we bend the antennae of the thermal shield of the catalyst.
  6. We unscrew three nuts, fastening the flange of the intake pipe and the catalyst flange. Remove the locking plate.
  7. Raise the additional muffler up and take out its bracket from the front cushion of its suspension (rubber bands).
  8. We disconnect a reception pipe of the additional muffler from hairpins of the catalyst. Remove the gasket.
  9. Disconnect the wiring harness from the control and diagnostic oxygen sensor connectors .
  10. Remove the sensor wire holders from the heat shield of the steering gear.
  11. With the help of a head on 13, unscrew the bolts fastening the catalyst to the bracket.
  12. We unscrew three nuts of fastening of the heat-shielding screen of a steering. Dismount the screen.
  13. We unscrew two nuts of a bracket of a pipe of the water pump (pomp). Remove the bracket.
  14. We dismantle the catalyst by unscrewing the eight nuts securing it to the cylinder head. We remove the catalyst and gasket.
  15. Install the new catalytic collector in the reverse order.

Before installing the catalyst, it is necessary to check the condition of the gasket. If it is damaged, you will have to buy a new one. Install the torn gasket in no case it is impossible!

Also check the flatness of the catalyst flange. This can be done by attaching to it, for example, a metal ruler. Use the measuring probe to measure the possible gaps. If they exceed 0.1 mm, we grind the surface of the flange.

Is there an alternative

? Will Priora work without a catalyst ? Of course it will be! The lack of a catalytic converter will not affect its performance in any way, as some "experienced" masters claim. Yes, the machine will no longer meet the established environmental standards, but it will not work worse.

If you do not want to spend on a regular catalyst, you can always buy a universal device that will cost you half the cost, considering the installation. In fact, it is the same catalytic converter with the same functions and a similar design. Yes, and they are produced mainly in the same factories as the original, and the price for them is lower due to the lack of various trade margins.

Well, if you want to perform an easy tuning of your "Priora", buy a good flame arrester for it. It is installed in place of the catalyst. With it and the engine power will increase due to improved patency of exhaust gases, and the sound of the power unit will acquire sporting notes.

A few words about "spiders"

There is another option for tuning, providing a complete rework of the exhaust system. It is called "straight". Its essence is to remove from the system all the elements that prevent the free exit of exhaust gases, including the catalyst.

The main detail of the direct flow is the insert ("spider"). This is an analogue of the exhaust manifold, which differs from the latter in the special connection of pipes, in which the exhaust gases leaving the cylinders practically have no effect on the subsequent exhausts.

On the "Prior" set two types of spiders: 4-1 and 4-2-1. The numbers indicate how the manifold pipes are connected. 4-1 предусматривает соединение четырех труб в одну. The catalyst insert ("Priora") 4-1 provides for the connection of four pipes into one. In the "spider" 4-2-1, the manifold pipes are first combined in a pair, and then converge into one.

It is believed that the optimum for the VAZ-2170 pipe connection is the 4-1 circuit, but the other is just as good. It is important that the mounting elements of all the details of the exhaust system match, in fact, apart from the insert, you will also need to purchase a resonator and a silencer.

How to prolong the life of the catalyst

Finally, read the tips that will help you for a long time not to return to the topic of replacing the catalytic converter:

  1. Do not use poor-quality gasoline. This solution will not only save the catalyst. совсем не тот автомобиль, в бак которого можно лить все, что горит. "Priora" is not the same car that you can pour everything that burns in the tank.
  2. Do not allow oil to get into the fuel. Noticing that the exhaust has acquired a blue tint, do not be lazy to check the compression in the cylinders. Possible wear of the details of the piston group, because of what the oil gets into the cylinders.
  3. Pay attention to the dashboard. If the CHECK warning light comes on and the car starts to get bad, it lost power, do not pull it with diagnostics.
