Automatic transmission, Toyota: typical faults

Foreign cars sold in Russia are often equipped with an automatic transmission. Such an assembly is much more convenient and comfortable, especially when driving around the city. Typically, automatic transmissions have a fairly large resource and with timely and competent maintenance can work very long. Almost all faults occur due to the fault of the owners themselves, who do not understand the maintenance features of automatic transmissions.

The Japanese automatic transmission (Toyota Corolla is also equipped with it) is one of the most reliable. In Russia, you can still see the old "Crowns" and "Marks" with their own and even never repaired transmission, despite the fact that they are already the third decade. It should be noted that some modern models of automatic transmissions, which are put on luxury modifications of Toyota and Lexus, do not require maintenance. This, of course, does not mean that the automatic transmission oil (Toyota Crown, among others) does not need to be changed at all. And many people do that. The fluid resource is not more than 60 thousand kilometers. Further, the oil begins to blacken and loses its protective properties. But this is not the only factor affecting the resource. Unfortunately, the modern tendency to complicate the design leads to a decrease in reliability.

Main problems and malfunctions

Typical problems with the automatic transmission are similar in many respects to different brands, including the automatic transmission (Toyota Mark-2 is no exception):

  1. Reducing the level of oil in the box, which is caused by a violation of the integrity of the block and the nozzles of the gearbox. Culprits may be burnt gaskets, old cracked pipes. It is necessary to check the oil level and top up if necessary. It should be noted that the oil for mechanical boxes is by no means subject to automatic operation due to its higher viscosity.
  2. All transfers are not included, except for the back, or vice versa. This is due to the wear of the clutches or the coupling itself. To eliminate, of course, have to remove the box and open it, making a visual inspection.
  3. It happens that the third and fourth gears are not included. The reason for this can be wear of clutches, broken cuff of the piston or damage to the slot.
  4. The gear does not turn on, the car is stationary. Here there can be several reasons. This is an insufficient level of oil, wear of friction clutches and their pistons, breakage of the coupling.
  5. Stalling during starting - the wear of the torque converter shaft or the malfunction of the clutch friction.
  6. Movement of the car in neutral position - jamming of the piston of switching, connection of disks owing to an overheat. Sometimes the adjustment of the shift lever is impaired.
  7. Turning the gear on and starting the car from the seat only after warming up. Here, most likely, there is wear of the clutches, which do not provide the transfer of torque.

When operating an automatic transmission, you first need to monitor the radiator and prevent contamination.

It is necessary to remember that the automatic box at work is heated, and when driving on the off road an additional radiator is often needed. Damage to the cooling system can lead to overheating of the oil. As a consequence, ignition of sealing rings and friction clutches. Thus, compliance with the temperature regime of automatic transmission is one of the most important conditions for a problem-free ride.

Features of selection and replacement of oil

Automatic gearboxes are designed so that the quality and lubricity of the oil are the most important factors affecting its durability. Any deviation from the norms can be detrimental to the unit. Therefore, it is so important to observe the service interval, guided by the oil change table for a particular model.

Aisin faults

The supplier of gearboxes for these vehicles for many years is the company Aisin, which specializes exclusively in these automobile units. But, in accordance with the tide of time, the simple design of these boxes is a thing of the past.

There were new multistage units with complex control algorithms and a switching system. But, as in any mechanism, the complication of design entails a decrease in reliability. Unfortunately, there are typical diseases in the Toyota automatic transmission.

Toyota Rav-4

For these SUVs, the U140 series box is installed (not to be confused with the one put on the Camry). This unit is deservedly popular due to its durability and reliability. But a weak place is also here - electronics. This series is equipped with electronic protection against breakage. When it is turned on, it blocks the operation of the unit completely. It is treated by replacing the electronic control unit.

"Toyota Corolla"

This model, moreover, that one of the oldest in the Toyot series, so it is also the most reliable. The most common automatic transmission (Toyota Corolla is also popular because of it) is the 4-speed box of the U341F series, which has already earned its highest reputation. But sometimes there are breakages in it. The main ailment is the failure of the hydraulic plate, which entails the replacement of the gearbox solenoid block. For the last generation of this model, Toyota establishes a "robot". This is a mechanical transmission with automatic electronic control. In such units, the clutch is controlled by a separate unit, which, if malfunctioning or partial failure, gives instructions for frequent switching on and off of the clutch. This leads to slips. The electronic control unit can be replaced and everything will be in order. However, if you do not do this in time, you will need to repair the clutch itself, since multiple on-off switches do not contribute to the longevity of this unit.

Automatic transmissions of the car "Toyota Camry"

The first generations of the "Camry" were equipped with A540E gearbox. This model has survived several modifications during its production. And they are rarely interchangeable: the same nodes, depending on the year of release, are completely different. This gearbox is quite a rarity in Russia. And with a breakdown, serious problems with spare parts can occur. For the new generation of the Toyota Camry, the automatic transmissions U140E and U240E are installed. The first - for motors 2.4 liters, the second - for 3-liter engines. The weaker U140E is poorly adapted to the smaller mass of the machine and therefore can not boast of high reliability. Frequent breakage on it is the failure of the back cover. This leads to burnout of clutches, clutch slip, increased engine speed and breakage of the automatic torque converter. "Toyota Camry" with a more powerful engine is equipped with wear-resistant gearbox, which is less fractured. However, here again there are problems with the back cover. In addition, there are isolated cases of failure of the control electronics.

Apparently, there are a lot of malfunctions of the automatic gearbox, and although they are often of the same type, this does not mean that it is worth ignoring the incomprehensible and non-standard behavior of the transmission. Never postpone finding out the reasons for later. Replacing the automatic transmission (Toyota Camry is no exception) can result in a very large amount. Therefore, it is important to maintain the technical condition of this node in a normal manner and regularly carry out maintenance. After every 150 thousand kilometers the box should be completely washed. This is done on a specialized stand, under pressure. This is the only way to remove the workings and metal shavings.
