Airport BOJ in Burgas: history, equipment, transfer and other useful information for tourists

The international airport (BOJ) in Burgas is located in the south-east of Bulgaria. This is the second largest air terminal in the country. It serves Burgas and sea resorts of the Bulgarian southern coast. The passenger traffic passing through it is steadily growing every year.

History of origin and development

June 27, 1937 the French company CIDNA (now part of Air France) has chosen a place in the area of the city of Burgas with the intention to build a radio station here. The contract, signed with the Bulgarian government, stipulated that only Bulgarians would be hired employees. June 29, 1947 Balkan Bulgarian Airlines started domestic flights between Bourgas, Plovdiv and Sofia.

In the years 1950-1960, BOJ Airport was expanded and modernized due to the construction of a concrete runway. In 1970, the airport terminal became international, serving 45 destinations.

The growing tourism industry in Bulgaria has led to the need to expand the airport. Investments were invested in the construction of a new terminal, purchase of sides, equipment and an increase in the apron area. In December 2011, the airport BOJ began work on the construction of Terminal-2.

It was planned that its capacity would be 2,700,000 passengers, and an area of 220,000 square meters. The building was designed in such a way that it could easily be modernized, further increasing the capacity, if necessary. The building was completed in December 2013. Terminal-2 replaced the older Terminal-1, built in the 1950s and expanded in the early 1990s.

The terminal is equipped with 31 check-in desks, three checkpoints, nine security bars and eight gateways. The arrival zone is divided into Schengen and non-Schengen, has 12 immigration stations and four moving luggage bands (one is 120 meters long, and three are for 70).

The passengers are offered an area of 8,600 square meters, with a post office, a bank, a currency exchange office, restaurants, cafes, bars, a VIP lounge, duty-free food and gift shops, newspaper and tobacco kiosks, travel agencies, car rental, taxi services, Point of first aid. The glissade of the air terminal in Burgas is 3200 meters. This is the fourth longest runway in the Balkans after Athens, Sofia and Belgrade. On October 31, 2016, the reconstruction of taxiways began. Repair will last until December 30 this year. The project includes a full rehabilitation of 3,500 square meters, as well as the territory adjacent to the point of the take-off runway.

In addition, during this period, the management and monitoring of the system for aerodrome lighting and lighting equipment for the approach will be replaced. The sum of expenses will make more than 1 million dollars.
