We increase the engine torque by ourselves

Each engine has some characteristics. Some have more, some have less. Everything is known that for a better dynamics the car requires a lot of power, but very few people know what the torque of the engine is. In simple terms, it is the moment of force that is applied to the crankshaft in order to turn it in full turn. It is logical to assume that if this is a force, then it is measured in Nm. Thus, the higher this figure, the more dynamic the car.

But if the power grows to about 5500-6000 rpm, the maximum torque of the engine develops at medium revs. As for diesel engines, they have such a characteristic seriously superior to gasoline engines, since the compression ratio in them is almost twice as large, therefore, a large energy is applied to the piston, which is then transmitted to the crankshaft.

Whatever one may say, the most common engine is the "four". Their volume varies, but manufacturers adhere to this design, since it is convenient to place it transversely, in addition, it is not so expensive in production as, say, the "six". But the undeniable fact is that the increase in the number of cylinders, without changing other characteristics, leads to a proportional increase in torque. For example, if the engine torque, which has 4 cylinders and 2 liters of volume, is 150 Nm, then increasing the number of cylinders to 6 will raise it to 225 Nm. Naturally, one must take into account friction losses and other external forces, so the net increase is about one-third, that is, the final result is 200 Nm.

Torque and power are constantly trying to increase. The easiest way to do this is to reduce the volume of the combustion chamber or in other ways to increase the compression ratio. In this case, it is worth remembering the engine reserve, because the cylinder head can simply be torn off the studs or bolts.

The second way is to install a crankshaft with a large knee. In this case, the engine speed will drop, in addition, you need to change the cylinders, because the stroke of the piston will change. In fact, this is a simple increase in the working volume.

Now - a bit of theory. Let's return to our increase in the number of cylinders. What is it so effective? The fact is that in the first case (4) an explosion in the combustion chamber occurs every 180 degrees. This means that the entire stroke length of the piston uses the energy of one cylinder. In the six-cylinder engine, this explosion occurs every 90 degrees of rotation of the crankshaft. In this case, while the piston passes through half of the working stroke, another explosion takes place in the other cylinder, now two crankshaft rotates. When the first comes to the bottom dead center, the second one will go half way, an explosion will occur in the third and so on. Obviously, such a design is more efficient.

The torque of the engine is a rather important characteristic, which is able to distinguish the unit from the general series. In conclusion, it should be added that more volumetric engines have greater torque and higher power.
