The volume of the cut glass, its application in practice

In the modern technologically developed time, a large number of all kinds of auxiliary equipment was invented to help the housewives, both for cleaning and cooking. But, as shown by practice, many housewives can not do in the kitchen without the usual classic faceted glass.

History of appearance

In history, there are two versions of the appearance of a faceted glass.

The first authorship belongs to the great sculptor Vera Ignatyevna Mukhina, the author of the famous monumental sculpture "Worker and Collective Farm Girl". She developed it specifically for the dishwasher of the time, as a glass of the usual form could not be fixed in it, fell and broke.

According to the second version, a faceted glass appeared in the distant times of the reign of Peter the Great. Efim Smolin, the glass maker of that time, made it for the convenience of seamen in the fleet. During the rolling, the glasses of faceted form slid less from the tables than the round ones, and after the fall they almost did not fight.

Birthday of a glass

Whatever it was and whoever attributed authorship, the official birthday of the faceted glass on September 11, 1943. According to historical data, on this day the first Soviet faceted glass was produced.

For the first time it was officially smelted in the oldest city of Russia, Gus-Khrustalny, its height was 9 cm, diameter 6.5 cm, it had 17 faces, and the volume of the faceted glass was 200 ml. It is he who has been considered classic since.

Then, when production was put on stream, they were released with 16, 17 and even 20 facets, and the volume of the cut glass in ml could be from 150 to 280.

Application area

In addition to the standard application, the faceted glass received many additional functions. With his help:

  • We made dumplings, vareniki. Its diameter, like nothing else, was ideally suited for cutting the dough under them. Some people use it until now, despite the availability of all sorts of devices for sale on the market.
  • Considered for three. The volume of the faceted glass, filled to the edge, made it possible to pour a half-liter bottle of hot for three. That is why it became the standard of drunkenness in the former USSR.
  • We planted seedlings. The lovers of the beds grew various seeds in faceted glasses, for some reason, considering that the seedlings grow better in it than in another container.
  • Removed excess moisture between the window frames. Until now, some grandmothers put a glass between the wooden frames filled with half salt, so that it absorbs frost and evaporation.
  • Measured products. Practically in any recipe there is such a measure of measurement as a glass. And it does not matter how much in the faceted glass of the product, it was and remains the standard measure in the recipes.
  • Soda was sold. In the old days, when there were still machines with bottled mineral water and soda in the streets, these glasses were installed in them. And they stood there for a reason, thanks to the uneven faceted surface of the glass, falling from a meter height, did not fight against the asphalt, which was very practical and economical.
  • Served tea. At public catering points and train wagons they drank tea from them. Even in modern equipped trains to this day, tea is served in faceted glasses, nicely inserted into cup holders.

Volume to Weight Ratio

And no matter how advanced technologies are, often in different recipes you can meet such a measure as a faceted glass.

Or, conversely, without the weights under the hand, with its help you can measure the right amount of the product. The main thing is that the volume of the cut glass should be 200 ml.
