The Matrona Church in Moscow is a temple for those seeking peace and healing

Believers from all over the world come to the church of Matrona in Moscow to worship her icon and ask for a good patroness of intercession, healing from infirmities and blessings. Who is this Matron, and why do Russian people go to her with their sorrows and joys?

Bird with closed eyes

Matrona Dmitrievna Nikonova was born in the Tula province, in the village of Sebino, on 10 (22) November 1881. Her parents, Dmitry and Natalia, were pious and industrious peasants. Matrona was the youngest of four children. The family lived very poorly, therefore it was decided to send the little Matron before the birth to the orphanage, which was patronized by Prince Golitsyn. However, before the birth, her mother saw a dream that turned out to be prophetic: in it, the unborn daughter appeared in the form of a white bird with a human face and closed eyes. God-fearing woman found the dream a sign from above and decided to leave the child in the family. And the girl was really born blind.

The God-chosen child

The Scriptures testify that God chooses helpers on earth before they are born. Evidence of eyewitnesses has been preserved, claiming that at the baptism of Matrona the holy father said that the child was God's chosen, and it was not in vain that she was born blind, accepting from birth humility and patience. Mother Matrona later said that since her birth, the girl did not eat anything on Fridays and Wednesdays - in those days when Orthodox Christians fast. On Matrona's breast was a mole in the shape of a cross. Surprisingly, the blind girl always knew about this and called her birthmark her cross, given at birth. From an early childhood the girl fell in love with going to church and actually grew up in it ...

In those years, none of the relatives could have imagined that once the name of their sick girl would be called Orthodox churches throughout Russia, including the opening of the Matrona Church in Moscow. But God knew about this even then, giving his ward special gifts.

Spiritual Gifts Matrons

The first manifestations of the gift began at eight. Even then, the suffering and ill people came to the girl, for whom she prayed fervently. In her youth, Matron traveled extensively with a spiritual mentor, making pilgrimages to many holy places. The seventeen-year-old Matron suddenly broke the paralysis, but she took it as God's will, and never complained of infirmity. Until the end of her life, Matrona remained in a sitting portable chair.

She happened to live in many cities, but she spent most of her life in Moscow, where she accepted pilgrims traveling all around, prayed for them, healed them, predicted the future ... That's why she got her name - Matrona Moskovskaya. The Church in Moscow still accepts those who ask for the intercession of a good patroness before God. And only at the very end of the life path, when the Matron was already very weak, she began to limit the number of parishioners. The time of her death Matrona knew in advance, so she managed to give all the necessary instructions regarding funeral services and burial. The funeral of the blessed Matrona took place on May 2, 1952, on the Week of Myrrh-bearers, on Danilov Cemetery. The burial and burial of Matrona was the beginning of her glorification as God's servant. Matrona was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church on May 2, 1999.
