Slavic mythology: a bird with a human face

In the mythology of different nations, a bird with a human face is found. This fairy-tale creature can be both good and evil, help people or, on the contrary, prevent them from achieving their goals. We all know about the Odyssey, the ancient Greek hero of the Trojan War. On the way home he was passing by the island of sirens, half-woman-half-bird. And only cunning and ingenuity helped him save the ship and his comrades from ruin. But our ancestors-Slavs also had mythical birds.

Birds of the Slavs

A bird with a human face or head was also among the Slavs, and not one. Such creatures differed in color of plumage, habitat, other features. But in the mythology of birds, a special role was assigned: it was the duck (duck), according to legend, took part in the creation of the world. They, born from the foam of the ocean or hatching from the acorns of heavenly oaks, dived into the depths of the sea and took out the earth. According to one version, they clamped the branches and leaves with silt, thus constructing a nest, and on the other - the magic stone-alatyr was raised to the surface, where it began to grow and turned into an earthly solid. Bird depiction often accepted the souls of the dead, the duck, for example, was firmly associated with the goddess Makoshya.

Magic birds

A bird with a human face is a special character. But, in addition to them, the world was inhabited by other birds. This Phoenix, or Finist, Firebird, as well as a number of other creatures with strange names: Mogul, Griffin, Skop, Kuva, Drebezda, Chiraia, Nogai ... Let's dwell on the most famous of them.

Phoenix. No, this is not a bird with a human face, but, nevertheless, the character is quite interesting and symbolic, however, like everything in our fairy tales and legends. It embodies immortality, eternal happiness and youth. Its plumage is fiery red, golden, it is fast, like lightning, like a ray of light. Finist symbolizes the renewal and rebirth - nature, man, everything. According to the legends, Phoenix takes a bird's appearance in the daytime, at night it appears as an excellent prince. Sometimes he falls asleep, but wakes up only from the tears of a girl in love. Finist - warrior, fighter, defender, guardian of justice and traditions, messenger of the gods and their assistant. Having grown old, he himself burns himself to be reborn and become even more beautiful, even younger.

Firebird is another character of Slavic tales. She dwells in Iryna Heaven, has a golden plumage that sparkles all over the district, and crystal eyes. Radiance is blind, but does not burn. This bird miraculously sings, sometimes speaks in a human voice, sometimes turns into a beautiful girl. A creature can enchant a person with a look or voice, but in captivity rarely pleases people with his singing, can fulfill a desire, and her pen brings happiness. The firebird guards a tree in the Garden of Eden with golden apples, which feeds on it.

Prophetic Gamayun

It's a fabulous bird with a human face. She is the messenger of the gods, the messenger of heaven, that is, she brought to the people a higher will. Gamayun was born with our planet, so she knows everything and can even portend the future. People come to her for advice, but you have to be able to ask her, and the answer must be understood. And this fairy bird lives with a human face near the sea, near the island of Buyan. When she flies across the sky, a storm is rising on the earth. A cry of hers promises happiness to every person.

Bird Alconost

This is another bird of paradise with a human face. Please note: it is necessarily bright! Has the head of a beautiful woman and an iridescent plumage. Symbolizes joy and happiness, treats people well, helps, warns of unhappiness. She sings so melodiously that the listener forgets about all the troubles in the world. Alkonost is a fabulous bird of paradise with a human face - it hibernates in Iryna Heaven, and in spring it returns to earth with strange flowers. Happiness will be found by those who see it, but it is very fast and flies away instantly.

Sirin

This dark bird with a human face in Slavic mythology symbolizes sorrow, sadness, it is the messenger of the king of the underworld. If a person meets her, it means that in the near future he is in trouble. Her head is female, her face is beautiful, but her body is a bird's. Her song is a comfort in sorrow, as it causes forgetfulness, can predict fate. However, the singing of Sirin is dangerous for man, although very melodic. This bird is similar to Alkonost, and they often travel together.

Stratim, or Strafil

Another bird with a human face is known in Slavic mythology - Stratim, or Strafil. This is a kind of progenitor of all mythical birds. It is gigantic and very mysterious, lives on the sea and the whole world can be obscured by its right wing. When she flaps her wings, the waves cover the surface of the water, and the scream of a bird causes a storm. The flight of Strafily causes an eerie flood, a flood that is dangerous not only for ships, but also for cities.

Instead of an afterword

We examined only the most famous wonder birds, in which they believed in Russia. As can be seen from the article, a meeting with each of them promised the person changes. And they were kind or not very good, already depended on fate, and also on the wits of a traveler. If I managed to correctly understand the song - was saved, if not - well, that's his destiny.

Many birds of paradise are familiar to us from fairy tales, epics, legends. But there are also such characters that were mentioned in the annals. They flew to the cities, sat on temples or huts, sang their charming songs. They came to the rulers in dreams, warned of changes in the state. Maybe one of the readers will be able to hear the sweet singing of one of them. Just be careful, do not scare the fairy creature!
