The largest cities in Russia. Small and large cities of Russia

Small and large cities of Russia differ between each other in terms of area and population. In the three main megacities of the country there are about 10 million people. The economic development of these cities is at a sufficiently high level, which allows us to constantly increase the number of jobs. It is this factor that largely influences population growth. In small cities, the standard of living is much worse. Enterprises that generate income and participate in development have almost completely ceased their work. The population in them fluctuates around 1000 people. The social sector is the only sphere that offers jobs. Of course, you can not even dream about a high salary, so the youth, arranging their lives, leaves such settlements.

Russian Federation

Russia is located in Europe and Asia. The country is populated by more than 146 million people. It occupies the leading position in the world in terms of its area (17 million km 2 ), the population is the ninth in the rating.

Moscow - the official capital of the state since 1918. It is the largest city in Russia. Official language is Russian.

More than 80% of all people living in the country prefer to live in industrialized cities. There are more than 1000 such settlements at the moment. Also, one million cities can be separately identified. They include about 15, among which the leading positions are held by Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Chekalin is the smallest city in Russia

The smallest inhabited locality at the moment is Chekalin with a population of about 980 people (the data is relevant for 2014). Unfortunately, every year this figure is constantly decreasing. This is mainly due to the lack of industrial development. Enterprises after the collapse of the Soviet Union were abandoned. At present, almost all the young people have moved to large cities. On the territory of the settlement there are only 3 shops. There is not even a branch of Sberbank, and residents have to go to the village of Cherepet. However, despite its size, it is a historical city. Located in the Tula region, and people became known only in the XIX century. From 1565 to 1944 it was called Likhvin. During the Great Patriotic War, it was occupied by German invaders. Renamed it in honor of the fellow partisan, who was shot in 1941. Subsequently, he was awarded the honorary title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

Big cities of Russia

In the Russian Federation there are two types of large cities. The first is based on the number of people. Millionaire cities are populated areas with more than 1 million inhabitants. They are also called megacities. They are the center of the country, its heart, in which all the major events take place. Here the main activity is concentrated. Some large cities of Russia have lost the status of a megacity due to the increase in the mortality rate.

In the lists of settlements by area are those that have a special status: the city. The word "area" should be understood as the size of the territory to the extreme. In addition, the largest of them can be a district and have federal significance. So far, there are only three such cities in the country.

Cities with over one million people in Russia (list)

The rating "Large Russian cities by population" is uniquely and fairly headed by Moscow. Behind it, respectively, are St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk.

Next, the fourth place, takes Yekaterinburg. More than 1 million people live here. Earlier it was called Sverdlovsk, but in 1991 it was renamed.

5th place went to Nizhny Novgorod. The largest city in the Volga Federal District. It is located on the European Plain, at the confluence of the Oka and the Volga. It was called Gorky until 1990.

6th place was given to Kazan. Most people live here in the Muslim faith. Kazan is the capital of Tatarstan with a population of about 1.2 million people. A settlement near the Volga has been erected. On its right bank is the largest port.

The 7th place is Chelyabinsk. It is unique in that it is the only one in the Russian Federation that has an intra-urban division. Megapolis, whose population is about 1 million 182 thousand people, was founded near the Ural Mountains, on a water stream called Miass.

A little less people live in Omsk. According to official figures, this figure reaches 1,173,000. In Siberia, this populated area ranks second in population.

Samara is located on the 9th position. The city was erected on one of the banks of the Volga. There are officially 172,000 people living there.

The city of military glory - Rostov-on-Don - was on the 10th place. The population is 1,114,800 people as of 2015. It is located on the banks of the Don.

11th place is occupied by Ufa. It is the center of science, religion, culture and sport. The population is more than 1 105 000 inhabitants.

The remaining 4 megalopolises have approximately the same number of people. These are Krasnoyarsk, Perm, Voronezh and Volgograd. In each of them there are no more than 1.1 million citizens.

Moscow

Speaking about the big cities of Russia, I just want to mention Moscow. It occupies an important place in the history of the state, even if it is its capital. The population is more than 12 million, the area is 1100 km 2 .

About the first building in Moscow, nothing is known, and it is impossible to say when the city was laid. The first mention of the capital appears in the early 12th century.

Moscow is multinational: 90% of the people living here are Russians. The remaining 10% are Ukrainians, Tatars, Armenians, Georgians, Byelorussians, Azerbaijanis and other nationalities. It is located on the Moskva River.

The capital is an important tourist attraction. Every time in the summer season, more than a million people come here. The Kremlin, located on Red Square, is the main attraction of the city. There are also the main administrative buildings and the mausoleum of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin.

St. Petersburg

The unofficial second capital of the Russian Federation is St. Petersburg. Answering the question "What are the big cities in Russia?", One can not help talking about it. Basically it is called the cultural center of the country. It has many names, while each is popular in its own area. For example, North Venice and Palmyra. Both in terms of population and area, St. Petersburg is much inferior to Moscow, but in terms of its popularity and significance for the state, it is no worse. There are well-developed different industries, both heavy and light.

It was founded in 1703. And from 1712 to 1918 was the capital of the Russian state. The population is 5 million people, the area is 1,439 km 2 .

Throughout its existence, it has become a landmark for the world. The historical center of the city is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is a sufficient number of historical buildings and monuments.

Novosibirsk

The third position in the ranking is occupied by the city of Novosibirsk. In the northern part of the country, it is the largest city. This is a major center for the development of science, industry, trade, and culture.

The city is a millionaire, however, unlike its predecessors, it will live only 1.5 million people. The area is 505.62 km 2 .

Novosibirsk was founded in 1893. There are severe climatic conditions here. In winter, the temperature can reach -50 o C, in summer - up to +35 o C. Quite often there are sharp temperature fluctuations.

Near Novosibirsk there is a reservoir, which was formed due to the dam of the city hydroelectric power station.

The large cities of Russia are significant centers of industry and other working spheres. They play an important role in the development of the country. In the most successful cities, the population is growing every year.
