The history of cross-stitch embroidery - from antiquity to the present day

The history of the appearance of cross-stitch as a separate type of needlework is unknown. However, even primitive people knew the basics of sewing. This is evidenced by the findings of archaeologists. During the excavations, animal skins were found, sewn with coarse stitches. There were also the first threads with needles. Both of them looked completely different than they are now. Instead of threads, veins of animals, wool, plant fibers, hair were used. The needles were made of wood, stone, bristles, and fish bones. The first cross-stitch patterns were found in Egyptian tombs. According to experts, these works were created approximately in 600 - 700 years BC. From this it follows that the history of cross-stitch embroidery totals more than 2,5 thousand years.

In each country the history of cross-stitching developed in its own way. Noticeably different style and color scheme of the drawings. As a rule, the images reflected national traditions, religious rituals, as well as what was considered beautiful by a single people.

For example, cross-stitching in Western Europe, which became particularly popular in the 16th century, reflected stories and texts from the Bible. At the end of the XVIII century the subject of images became more diverse. Embroidery in the East was distinguished by the variety of colors used and the complexity of the ornament.
