"The Great Gatsby": a brief summary of the novel and its main idea

The novel "The Great Gatsby", written in the spring of 1925, is really great. He did not bring glory to his author Francis Scott Fitzgerald during his lifetime. Only thirty years later, in the 60s of the last century, came the recognition of the classic: the US school program need to know the summary of the "Great Gatsby". This is a "very American" book: a novel-idea, a novel-thought. Why did he "succeed"? First, some features of Gatsby are peculiar to Francis Scott himself: his wealth, his secular life, his dreams, his flight of thought, his unhappy love for his wicked, subsequently mad, beautiful wife, Zelda Seir, who led the writer to a stroke and death. Secondly, the author wrote about his generation in the same way as Pasternak, Sholokhov, as now writes Pelevin.

To really get an understanding of the book "The Great Getsby" the short content will help a little. Open the ending of the novel - here is his keynote. In one of the last paragraphs, Fitzgerald mentions a romantic sailboat of the 17th century, rushing from the distant coast of Europe to the coast of Long Island (later the seat of Gatsby's residence), the shining eyes of a Dutch sailor, "breathlessness" from the beauty of the environment and "the ability to admire." That's it such a man, like a time torn from the same Dutch sailboat, Scott Fitzgerald "threw" in the 20s of the last century. Is this the keynote that the 17-year-old James Goetz, impressed by the yacht of the millionaire Dan Cody, came up with a new name for Jay Gatsby? He remains faithful to the end of the name, born of youthful imagination.

Having opened a book for yourself, you will understand why in the United States the name Great Gatsby is considered a household name. The summary of the book is the story of Lieutenant Gatsby's acquaintance with the rich girl Daisy, second cousin of Nick Carraway, and his feelings for her. He went to the front, she married the millionaire Tom Buchanan. Even the fact that young Daisy on the eve of the wedding threw away the gift of her future husband - a fifty thousandth necklace of pearls - and drank "into the smoke", did not turn away the wedding. However, it always struggled with two principles: understanding the benefits and the desire for happiness. But if the girl was protected by wealth, then in the warring army was the Great Gatsby. The summary of his subsequent biography: the title of major, the fire of the First World, the study in Oxford. The young man understood that his beloved belonged to another estate, to the brim full of luxury, life, so he strove to become rich by any means, even with the help of clandestine alcohol trade, violating the "dry law" (bootlegging).

But all this is happening behind the scenes. The novel shows him already bought a residence in the resort suburb of New York, not far from the Buchanan mansion. Anonymous tactics of entering the world and contact with Daisy was chosen by the Great Gatsby. The summary is as follows: organizing endless noisy foam parties one by one , in the end he wanted to invite Desi. His plan was a success, she responded to his call, even she was ready to terminate her marriage. But Tom Buchanan, the husband, took the naive explanation of Gatsby in the Plaza hotel that Daisy would leave him as a signal to action. He inquired about the illegal income of the main character of the novel, told his wife about it. She preferred to live with her husband, even knowing about his betrayal with his mistress. Cruelly paid for trying to "break into the upper light" the Great Gatsby. Summary in the future acquires features of fatality and tragedy. Tom Buchanan faced a case that he did not miss: Daisy, being behind the wheel of Jay's car, knocked Myrtle, George Wilson's wife, to death, then drove away. When the inconsolable husband came to him, questioning, Buchanan pointed at Jay. George Wilson shot the Great Getsby, who is resting at his residence, and then committed suicide.

What did Fitzgerald want to say to his countrymen with this novel? Probably, he tried to "shake" the negative balance between dream, admiration, passion and mercantile, pragmatic.
