Shin bone: trauma, symptoms, treatment

The shin is two long tubular bones of different thickness. The tibia is located medially, and the peroneal bone is lateral. The tibia with the knee joint is attached to the femur.

Most often, a fracture of the bones of the lower leg is accompanied by damage to the fibular and tibia. Less often the shin bone breaks down in isolated areas.

Fracture of lower leg bone

Often the cause of a fracture of the fibula of the lower leg is a direct injury, applied to the bone located on the outside of the leg. But this kind of fracture is less common than, for example, fracture of the tibia. This type of injury can be caused by indirect exposure.

When the tibia of the tibia breaks, the fragments do not scatter over a large distance. The fibula retains them tightly at the injured area.

The fracture of the tibia of the tibia is accompanied by a displacement at an angle. However, there is a high probability that the fragments of the injured bone will be displaced in width. In such cases, their final location may be different.

The shin bone is also susceptible to a double fracture: most often this occurs with an indirect trauma.

Symptoms of the disease

Recognize the symptoms of bone fracture of the hip, shin, etc. is very simple. The main characteristic of the injury is severe pain in the fracture region. After some time on the damaged leg area there is swelling, and the skin color changes. To address to the traumatologist better in the shortest possible time, as a fracture can be accompanied by an open wound or crepitus.

A patient who has a broken leg bone can not stand on his own feet. Each movement of the injured limb is accompanied by splashes of pain. The injured leg visually appears shorter.

In fracture of the tibia, the peroneal nerve is often injured. In this case, the foot hangs down, it is impossible to imagine even the slightest movement. The injured area becomes immune to external stimuli.

Also, with a fracture of the bone, the vessels may be damaged. A sign of the vessel's injury is the pale skin that gives off in blue.

In cases where both bones of the shin have been broken, the patient feels severe pain in the injured area. The shin is deformed, the skin acquires a blue tint. In a short period the leg swells and loses mobility.

Diagnostics

But what if the shin bone hurts ? First, you need to contact the trauma center as soon as possible . The specialist will provide first aid.

Sometimes it is possible to diagnose fracture of the peroneal or tibia without additional procedures: X-ray examination, etc.

However, most often to determine the fracture of the fibula, doctors resort to additional equipment. X-ray photographs are performed in two projections: direct and lateral.

Specialists note that it is with the help of an X-ray apparatus that it is possible to determine the exact displacement of the bone and the location of the fragments, and also to reveal the most correct type of treatment.

Treatment

Treatment of the fracture of the fibula of the lower leg is the simplest and easiest kind of recovery. In most cases, gypsum is applied to the injured limb, which can be removed after 15-20 days. Doctors say that incomplete recovery after a fracture of the fibula occurs very rarely.

If the tibia or both bones of the shin has been broken, then the treatment will be more difficult, and the recovery process will be lengthy. With such fractures, patients are divided into several groups, according to the severity of the trauma, and for each of them an individual type of treatment is prescribed.

Sometimes, with a fracture of the shin bone, its fragments are displaced in such a way that the application of plaster lingon does not help. In such cases, skeletal traction is necessary. With this procedure, surgical intervention can be prevented. However, this method of treatment has several significant disadvantages: the bones coalesce longer, the patient is prescribed a strict bed rest.

Chest injuries

A shin injury is another type of bone injury. The main sign of the disease is a lump on the bone of the shin.

A bruise is a trauma that is accompanied by damage to soft tissues, a violation of the skin and its structure. The first symptom of a shin injury is the redness of the skin in the area of injury. Often, after a bruise on the skin, a small seal develops, which does not cause severe pain reactions. However, doctors advise you to contact specialists even in these cases.

Soon after the injury, a blister is formed on the site of the injury, accompanied by subcutaneous hemorrhages. At this point, a hematoma forms around which the skin swells.

How to treat a lump on the shin?

With a bruise on the lower leg, it is important to contact a traumatologist as soon as possible, who will be able to make a correct diagnosis. However, if this is not possible, it is important to provide first aid.

The person injured should remain at rest, a cooling compress must be applied to the site of the injury. Cold will help stop internal bleeding and relieve pain. If scratches and abrasions were found at the site of the injury, they should be treated with an antiseptic.

Usually, any disease can be prevented by avoiding risk factors. However, bruises and fractures of the lower leg are traumas that occur accidentally. One can only try to avoid steep descents, falls, etc.
