Repairing an umbrella with your own hands: tips and tricks

With the onset of the autumn pore, we often take an umbrella with us when we leave the house. And if we use a reliable umbrella-cane, if it's already raining or thunderclouds appeared on the horizon, then the umbrella is in our purse "just in case". And this case comes often: an unexpected rain with a gusty wind - and our compact "wand-burglar" is broken. Prices for the repair of umbrellas are considerable, and the workshop is often located at a decent distance from the house. Can I repair the umbrella with my own hands? Let's understand!

If the umbrella is cheap, then, probably, it is better to buy a new one. After all, a repaired, flimsy and substandard mechanism will not last long - it will break again. However, if the product is expensive, you can try to make it home repair yourself.

Trough spokes are the most vulnerable part of the umbrella mechanism. In the olden days they were made of steel, now economical manufacturers use cheap aluminum and plastic. A broken spoke can be replaced with a similar piece from an old Soviet umbrella (do not throw them away, leave them on parts). If you can not pick up a spoke, any metal tube 5-6 millimeters in thickness will do. Repairing the umbrella with your own hands in this case is simple - straighten the spoke from the end with pliers, put a tube on it and squeeze it again.

The second common cause of failure is shattered rivets. Now they are made thin, from copper or brass, so they often fall out. If you do not repair the umbrella with your own hands at once, it is better not to use the umbrella at all - the loose knitting needle will easily tear the fabric. It's quite easy to fix this fault - take a small piece of wire and fasten the loosened ends.

The simplest breakdown is torn or ground threads. Take a steel or ordinary strong thread or line, restore the broken seam. This repair of the umbrella-machine with their own hands is within the power of everyone.

If from a poor-quality alloy of umbrella parts you have noticed rust traces on the fabric - it does not matter, they can be easily removed. Wipe the rusty stain with lemon juice and substitute under a stream of cold water. If the umbrella is heavily polluted, ammonia will help, or rather, its solution (half a glass per liter of water).

Sometimes, even on quality umbrellas, wears in the course of time - this is also easy to eliminate. Repairing an umbrella with your own hands here is to apply a clear varnish for nails to rubbing.

After that, the umbrella is dried in a semi-closed state - the fabric should not be too tight.

If the mechanism itself becomes useless, it will be necessary to carry the umbrella into the workshop. Even if you are well versed in the technology and understand how to eliminate this breakdown, you still can not close the spring of the mechanism - this can only be done with a special device that the masters have. If the handle or the tip of the umbrella is broken, look for the familiar ones with the same old umbrella and ask for a spare part or simply take it to a workshop where you will be given a new part.

Be careful when operating the umbrella, in a strong wind it is better to use special anti-wind umbrellas with flexible knitting needles or umbrellas-walking sticks. Women's umbrellas - a capricious and fragile thing!
