One of the main actors, designed to lead the reader to understand the idea of the novel, is the image of Stolz. He "shades" the image of the main character of the narrative Oblomov in his tireless struggle for his salvation. At the same time, the author gives Stoltz the living features of the human personality, which allows him to look deeper into his soul and understand the motives of his actions.

Appearance of Andrei Ivanovich Stolz

From the first appearance on the pages of the great work the reader can accurately "outline" the portrait of Stolz in the novel "Oblomov." This character strongly in everything is the opposite of Oblomov. He is active, mobile, deprived of bouts of depression and spleen.

Before the reader Stolz appears in 2 parts of the work (the third chapter). After a long absence our character went to Oblomov and found his friend lying on the sofa. Andrei without hesitation showed active participation in the position of Ilya Ilyich, trying to shake off the spleen that had defeated a friend.

Motivation

Every action has a motive. The behavior of Andrei Ivanovich follows from his characteristics, given by the author of the work. The image of Stolz was briefly described by Gocharov himself: "The leading role in life belongs to the" new force "- the energetic businessman Stolz. He wins, after him the future ».

What makes Andrei try to save Oblomov? First of all, love and affection for your friend. He sincerely, carefully takes interest in his health. Realizing that staying on the couch is not due to physical, but because of spiritual infirmity, considers it necessary to change the way of life of Ilya Ilyich. He acts according to his beliefs about what a person's life should be like-this is the true portrait of Stolz.

Friends of childhood

Based on the narration, the characters are friends from childhood. Andrew used to behave with Ilya as the elder with the younger. Stolz remembers that in his youth Oblomov, having thrown off his sleepy veil, was not alien to poetry, so he hopes for the success of his "educational" impact. At first, one gets the impression that Andrei's indefatigable nature takes precedence over Oblom's passivity. In fact, thanks to his energetic energy, Andrei Ivanovich, outwardly managed to move his friend from his place, but internally it was all the same Oblomov.

Characteristics of Oblomov and Stolz

Both comrades, although friends from childhood, were completely different in character and attitude to life. Stoltz liked to "spin" in society, to make contacts, he was a business man. Oblomov was a homebody, he liked to stay alone and do "self-discovery".

The portrait of Stolz and the portrait of Oblomov were so different from each other that the author could not get around the subject of the interpersonal conflict of the main characters. Once Ilya Ilyich "rebelled" against Stolz's role, which was the beginning of the psychological confrontation between friends. What was Andrei Stoltz thinking about during the well-known conversation with Oblomov, what is his inner monologue? Did he agree internally with his friend when he uttered an emotional tirade about the emptiness and vanity of public life?

Rather, yes. He does not interrupt Oblomov and objects to him rather sluggishly, which somewhat disrupts the familiar image of Stolz in the novel: "It's all old - this has been said a thousand times". He even asks Ilya to continue to develop his thought and reward him with the title of philosopher. Offering Oblomov to draw an ideal way of life, Stolz pushes him to confession, citing examples of remarkable acts of his youth. Thus, he wants to get Ilya to think about the need to change his life.

The image of Andrei Stolz is characterized by his incredible determination. Touched by Oblomov's confession, he is even more convinced of the need for his help and exclaims: "I will not leave you." And it was only when Ilya Ilyich began to paint new obstacles in the way of action that Stolz understood that it was necessary to act resolutely and firmly. "Now or never," is his ultimatum.

Attitude to the love of Olga and Oblomov

Having left abroad and leaving Oblomov in Olga's care, Stolz does not think of the possibility of a romance between them. Much later, when Olga confesses to him in his past love for Oblomov, Stolz will not attach importance to her first feeling. Why? No, this is not wounded pride - this is not the portrait of Stolz - rather, the underestimation of the personality of Ilya Ilyich, the inability to catch the subtle, gentle, clean that is in his soul and can provoke a woman's response.

In the fourth part of the novel, the main character "plunged into a dream" in Pshenitsyna's house, becoming her husband in time. Time seemed to turn back, as if returning Ilya Ilyich to his native Oblomovka. Stoltz is also not indifferent to Oblomov's fate. Arriving in the city, a friend visited Ilya.

What did Andrei feel during the meeting with his friend? He talks to Ilya, rather, as a wise teacher with a negligent student. His thoughts are occupied by Olga, but, of course, he does not admit to Oblomov in his feeling for her. Nevertheless, he first talks about Olga, because he wants to talk about this girl. He understands that Olga Oblomov, who was fascinated by Olga, could not follow Stolz and come to Paris, and excuses him.

Save a Friend

Portrait of Stolz in the novel "Oblomov" is endowed with features of a strong personality, setting difficult tasks and striving to fulfill them. To awaken Oblomov for at least some kind of activity is his job, that's why he frightens a friend with terrible diseases that will surely come if he does not change his habits. But it does not help. In addition, he is spurred on by self-esteem: he promised Olga to save Oblomov. Can he not fulfill her request!

When Andrew realized that due to his negligence Ilya was also robbed, he, a man of the business world who knows the account of money, is extremely outraged. He's excited. This is indicated by his plastic: "... with his hands clasped at this story." Then he turns to his comrade in an orderly tone and "almost forcibly" takes Oblomov to himself to settle everything. Emotionally the scene is built by the author on a growing scale. An inexperienced reader has the right to hope that now Ilya will listen to a friend, go to the village, and everything will be arranged safely. But Goncharov, true to the truth of the characters, leads his heroes in a different way. The purposeful and strong image of Stolz could not change the weak and weak-willed image of Oblomov.

The practicality of Stolz determines the basis of his worldview. The hero of the novel is painted by a sober realist, in whose soul "there was no place for a dream, mysterious, mysterious." Things that were beyond his comprehension were in his eyes some kind of optical deception. Perhaps the total misunderstanding of the character and thoughts of a friend prevented Andrei from becoming "a messiah."

Obolozhnym Oblomov

The characteristics of Oblomov and Stolz are particularly clearly traced to the end of the narrative. Not waiting for Oblomov in the village, Stolz again visits a friend. He is struck not only by the appearance of Ilya Ilyich, but also by the situation surrounding him. Almost immediately it comes to Olga. Knowing people and having enough life experience, Andrew is excited and touched by how sincerely Ilya rejoices in the happiness of his friends. He even wants to wrest this lazy man with a beautiful soul from a gray, wretched environment. Andrei tries to disturb his soul, to stir up memories of the past, but Oblomov resolutely suppresses him: "No, Andrew, no, do not remember, did not move, for God's sake!"

Then Stolz undertakes to enthrall him with a description of those remarkable changes that took place in Oblomovka, as well as the opportunity to equip the new house according to his taste. But this also leaves Oblomov indifferent. Stolz is silent, discouraged, does not know how to proceed. Watching an intoxicated friend, he tries to understand why with sufficient funds Ilya is surrounded by such poverty. Finally, it seems to him that he is close to unraveling, and then he begins to act. Applying his will, knowledge and communication, Stolz again rescues Oblomov from lack of money.

After 5 years

After five years Goncharov draws us the last and most dramatic meeting of friends. Of course, Stolz doubts that he will be able to resurrect Oblomov. And yet he considers it his duty to pull him out of the "pit" into a more decent and decent life. Supported by his wife, he intends almost to force Oblomov into a carriage and take him away. He was ready to meet Ilya's resistance, but he is not ready to accept the news that a friend is married to Agafya Matveyevna and has a son: "Before him suddenly opened an abyss ..."

Andrei Ivanovich knows nothing about the deep and strong feeling in Pshenitsyn's chest, a simple and undeveloped woman. He remains silent for a long time, not answering Olga's insistent questions, deeply shocked by the loss of her friend.

What is the true image of Stolz?

Briefly answer the question of who Stolz is, not so simple. Despite the abundance of positive epithets, this person is not perfect. His excessive practicality made it difficult to discern in Oblomov not just an apathetic, sometimes weak-willed and lazy friend, but a philosopher, a man with a subtle spiritual organization, capable of loving and falling in love with himself. The author of the novel did not fail to emphasize the excessive dryness of Andrei Ivanovich. His activities were limited to personal well-being. However, he wanted to help Oblomov sincerely, without hidden subtexts.

The portrait of Stolz, in the opinion of the thinkers of that time, is close to the ideal. To shake the country, it was precisely these "stoltsy" that were required. Dobrolyubov noted that the country needs a type of such a public figure who would also actively fight with Oblomovism in all areas of life.

Stolz - the positive hero of Goncharov - sharply contrasted Oblomov. The very social situation surrounding the future "non-agent and tourist", the conditions and ways of his upbringing and education are radically different from Oblomov's. Stolz is not a dreamer. First of all, he is a "business man". But this, however, does not prevent him from striving to "balance the practical sides with high needs of the spirit."
