Pop art yesterday and today

Pop art is an international movement in art, primarily in painting, sculpture and graphics, emerged independently in England and the United States in the mid-1950s and became in the 1960s the dominant form of artistic expression in North America and Europe. Images borrowed in the media in advertising created for the purpose of selling goods and services are depicted in photorealistic form.

The term "pop art" was coined in the process of discussion by an independent group of artists of artifacts of mass culture at the Institute of Modern Art (ICA) in London. This group included the artist Richard Hamilton, who is called the author of the first collage work in this direction, and the famous sculptor and graphic artist Eduardo Luigi Paolozzi. In the media, the term was used for the first time in 1958 by a critic, Lawrence Elloway, who described the newest form of artistic expression as the "lower" level of culture in relation to the continuum of fine art, embracing advertising, sci-fi illustrations and automotive modeling.

Pop art today is most associated with the work of New York artists: Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist and others. But the main events that have become part of the new art form have occurred in different countries (Britain, Spain, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan). After the movements of abstract expressionism and neodadism, pop-reintroduction into identifiable images was a big shift in the modernist direction. The subjects studied did not belong to the traditional "high art", dedicated to the themes of mythology, history, generally valid values, and the characteristics of the surrounding world.

Pop art, noting people in their everyday life, familiar and familiar objects, thus sought to raise the mass culture to the level of fine art. Creating paintings or sculptures depicting objects of everyday life, artists sought to blur the boundaries between "high" art and "low" culture. The concept that there is no hierarchy in culture, and any source can be used for inspiration, is the most important characteristic of the direction. Artists recognized that there is no special access to anything, be it the world of nature, the architectural environment, the soul. In their opinion, everything is interconnected, and they sought to show these links literally in their art. Perhaps due to the fact that commercial images were given special significance, one of the most recognizable styles of contemporary art is pop art.

"Photoshop" allows you to create an effect of this retro style, which in modern times is extremely popular in interior design. There are even special training programs, so today everyone can become almost Roy Lichtenstein or Andy Warhol. By the way, many of the artists started their star career in commercial art. For example, Andy Warhol was a very successful illustrator of magazines and graphic designer, James Rosenquist - advertising billboard designer , Ed Rusha - graphic designer. Their experience greatly enriched the visual vocabulary of popular culture.

Pop art in the interior makes its design unusual and very colorful. The purpose of the style associated with the "uprising" against conservative norms in art is to be brave and luxurious. The images used for decoration can be of different sizes (from small illustrations to huge wall murals). A bright color palette will immediately decorate any room and be sure to attract attention. Pictures created in Photoshop, with the effect of pop art can be hung over the sofa, bed, fireplace (if any). Also it is necessary to think over furniture: sofas, armchairs, chairs, tables. It is desirable that it be of simple shapes, but at the same time catchy, with futuristic elements (for example, a chair-egg), with ornaments, contrasting drawings.
