Plywood: dimensions (GOST). Standard plywood dimensions

It was the first time that plywood was produced in the middle of the 19th century. At the moment it is a very common material used for interior decoration of premises, the erection of structural elements of buildings, in the production of furniture, packaging, making toys, etc. Modern industry produces a variety of plywood. The dimensions of the sheets, their thickness and quality determine the scope of this material and its cost.

What is this material?

Plywood consists of several layers of veneer, glued in such a way that the fibers in adjacent layers are perpendicular. Therefore, it is devoid of the main drawbacks of wood - the ability to crack, shrink and deform. Of course, since chemicals are used in the production of plywood, and in particular phenolic or carbamide-formaldehyde adhesives, it is significantly inferior to the ecological safety of wood.

Standard sizes

When buying this material, you should pay attention primarily to the length and width of the sheets. Most often in stores you can find plywood of standard sizes. Such sheets are quite convenient in installation and during transportation. The standard length of plywood according to GOST - 2.44 m, width - 1.22 m. There are also sheets and more or less. A rather widespread variety is plywood with a width of 1.525 m (usually square). The length of the sheets can reach 3.66 meters. Thus, the standard dimensions of plywood are 2.44 x 1.22 m.

What thickness can there be?

Of course, the length and width are not the only parameters by which plywood can differ. Another important indicator is its thickness. In the manufacture of packaging and furniture, for example, rather thin sheets are used. In finishing works, as well as in the construction of buildings, a much thicker plywood is used. Dimensions in this plan depend on both the number of layers and the thickness of the veneer.

The production of plywood is handled both by ordinary companies and enterprises, as well as by specialized ones. In the first case, the material is made from 3 to 30 mm in thickness. The step between the values is about 3 mm. Specialized enterprises are produced including "aviation" plywood, the thickness of which - with the preservation of strength - can be very small.

What you should know about

By marking, you can also determine the direction of the fibers of the face layers. Usually they are located along, that is, along the length of the sheet. But sometimes there are variants in which the fibers are oriented in width. In this case, the size of the plywood sheet is indicated with the length extension to the second place. It looks like this - 1.22 x 2.44 m. In standard sheets with the usual direction of the fibers, the size is indicated as follows: 2.44 x 1.22 m.

Number of plywood layers

This indicator may also vary. However, usually sheets have an odd number of layers (a minimum of three). Sometimes in the manufacture of used veneer from the same wood, sometimes - from different. The face layers are usually made of the highest quality material. In the middle, the veneer plates may be worse. Sometimes on sale meets and plywood with only one quality outer layer. In this case, the reverse side of the sheet is called the reverse side.

Material grades

So, you need plywood for any purpose. Dimensions, thickness and number of layers are not the only parameters to consider when buying. Watch it is also necessary for the alphabetic or digital indication of the quality of the face layer. At the moment according to GOST 30427-96 there are only four types of plywood:

  • A is the first grade. In this case, up to three small knots per 1 m 2 are allowed on the face. This is a very smooth plywood, used mainly for finishing the structural elements of buildings.
  • В - the second grade. The knots on such plywood can be up to 10 per 1 m 2 . Worth this material is a little cheaper than the first-class.
  • With - the third grade. This plywood is used usually for making containers or hidden structures.
  • D is the fourth grade. This variety is also used mainly for the production of containers.

Such marking is currently in use, but is considered obsolete. Therefore, the variety on the label can be indicated and simply by the Latin number from I to IV. The letter E in the new marking marks the best elite material.

Size of plywood 10 mm

This is the most popular type of material. This plywood is used mainly in the construction of buildings and for the production of enclosing structures, including those loaded.

The size of plywood 10 mm can be different. However, as with any other thickness, standard sheets of 2.44 x 1.22 m are most often sold and used.

Varieties of moisture resistance

Among other things, there are different brands of this material. In this case, the ability of plywood to maintain its working properties at a certain degree of humidity of the environment is taken into account. The quality of the material in this plan basically depends on which adhesive was chosen for bonding veneer sheets.

Marking for moisture resistance:

  • FC is a material used for indoor work in dry rooms. It is not too waterproof plywood, but the environment is the cleanest. In this case, the layers are bonded with adhesives based on urea resins.
  • PSF - plywood is moisture resistant, the dimensions of which can be either standard or not. This option has a greater hardness and mechanical strength than FC. It is used mainly for outdoor work, for example, when installing a base under the roof. The layers in such a material are fixed using adhesives based on formaldehyde resins.
  • FOP - laminated plywood. In this case, the outer layers of sheets are additionally glued with a special film, which serves as an excellent protection not only from moisture, but also from ultraviolet radiation, as well as from the action of various aggressive media.

Varieties by degree of processing

Among other things, plywood, whose dimensions and degree of moisture resistance can be different, also differs in the quality of the treatment of the face layers. In this respect, the material is classified as follows:

  • Ш1 - sheets are ground only with one - obverse - side;
  • Ш2 - grinding is performed from both sides;
  • NS - untreated plywood.

Breeds of wood

As already mentioned, plywood can be made of different materials. It can be both coniferous and deciduous tree species. In the first case, fir, pine or spruce is usually used. Of hardwoods (birch, beech, linden), a harder plywood is obtained. Sometimes for the manufacture of this material, tropical timber is used - gobun, meranti, latan. A very interesting variety is decorative plywood. In this case, the face layer can be made of cherry, beech or oak.

Plywood: dimensions and prices

Of course, the cost of the material will depend on the dimensions of the sheets. The more thickness, length and width, the more expensive the sheet. Affects the price and grade of plywood. So, the material marked with the letter D 1.52 x 1.52 m, will cost approximately 210-250 rubles. A large standard sheet of the first grade, 6.5 mm thick, is 1000 r. The option of 12 mm will cost about 1300-1500 rubles. Quality plywood in 2.1 cm will cost in 2000 rubles.

How to choose a material for the construction of a country house

Plywood, dimensions and prices for which are interrelated, can be used in the construction of buildings for a variety of purposes. The usual areas of its application in this case:

  • Sheathing of frame walls outside under plaster. In this case, use material of the FSC brand with a thickness of at least 9 mm.
  • Sheathing of frames from the inside. For this purpose, plywood is also suitable.
  • The device is a continuous litter under the roof. It is also made from the FSR. The size of the plywood sheet is usually the standard. Its thickness should be at least 9 mm with a rafter step of 30 cm, 12 mm at 60 cm, 18 mm at 90 cm.
  • Covering the walls and ceiling of ordinary rooms over the insulation from the inside. In this case, plywood of the second grade FC can be used, it is quite thick.
  • Alignment of old wooden floors. Since PBS plywood can release harmful formaldehyde vapors, it is also better to use the FC variant to perform such works. However, under the sheets should be at the same time lay a waterproofing.

As you can see, plywood, the thickness, quality and dimensions of which can be different, is almost universal material, which has excellent performance characteristics and is easy to install.
