Overlapping on metal beams: advantages and disadvantages

To the quality and strength of the floors in the building of any design, particularly stringent requirements are imposed. After all, the integrity of the house itself and the safety of the people living in it depend on their reliability. At present, two types of ceilings are used in construction: beams and beams. The first, as more durable, are used much more often.

For different types of houses use as overlapping on metal beams, and on wooden, and also ferro-concrete. The type of load-bearing elements at the same time depends on the features of the structure of the building. Arrange slabs on wooden beams is permissible only in small private houses, whose height does not exceed three floors. In other cases, metal structures are used. They have both advantages and disadvantages.

Overlapping over metal beams is very durable and reliable. This is one of their main advantages. Such beams can be used for sufficiently wide spans. Since they are subject to deflections, the most rational is the use of the channel and I-section cross sections. Similar elements are installed in spans up to a width of 24 meters. In this case, the step between them should not be more than one meter. Metal beams are fireproof and resistant to the effects of fungi and microorganisms.

However, they also have a disadvantage - they are prone to corrosion. To make overlaps on metal beams more reliable, the latter are often wrapped with various materials that prevent access to moisture. A similar method is used to improve their heat and sound insulation qualities. In case of need of repair, the areas affected by corrosion are strengthened with metal plates.

Correct calculation of overlap on metal beams is very important. The most important thing in this matter is to choose a rental with the necessary characteristics. He must have a sufficient safety margin in each particular case. When designing the project, important parameters such as span width, beam pitch, and the useful load on the overlap are taken into account. At the same time, the function of the latter and its weight are taken into account. For the attic, the payload index should not exceed 75 kg per m 2 . For interfloor and basement - 150 kg per m 2 .

When constructing the actual flooring, wooden rolls or lightweight reinforced concrete slabs are used. Such structures are capable of withstanding a huge load. Sometimes monolithic overlap on metal beams is also used. The fact is that to arrange the formwork and fill the span with concrete without additional support from below is quite problematic. In addition, the design in this case is much more reliable. In some cases, wooden bearing elements are used for monolithic overlappings.

The main advantage of such a design, as the overlap on metal beams, is its strength, as well as the relative ease of maintenance and repair. It can withstand enormous loads, transferring it to walls and supports, while increasing the stability and rigidity of the entire building as a whole.
