Nurses Day: a bit of history ...

International day of the nurse in different countries is marked differently. In some countries of the world it begins to celebrate in early May, for example, in the USA, where professional conferences and celebrations begin on May 6. In other countries, a strictly dedicated day for this celebration does not exist at all, however, it is mostly celebrated on May 12. For the first time the idea of the holiday was voiced in 1953, however, the first time the nurse's day was celebrated as much as 12 years later. May 12 is Florence Nightingale's birthday, the founder of the Relief Service during the Crimean War. It was this woman who became the culprit of the celebration.

A bit of history ...

Florence Nightingale was an English aristocrat, who was educated only for men. The terrible events of the Crimean War deeply touched Florence, and she decided to use her outstanding abilities for good. Since the wounded soldiers needed constant care, the woman gathered a group of nurses who went to the field hospitals of the Crimea. Although surgeons were skeptical about this idea, the woman did not stop at anything.

Even before the war, Florence spoke of her desire to create her own sister community, showing great interest in caring for sick people. Nightingale wanted to change the stereotype about female nurses, who were usually either drunkards or girls of easy virtue.

During the war, the nurse increased the number of wards in hospitals, so that the wounded were not so crowded and more comfortable. She walked around them even at night, every day. The nurses and nurses who worked with her also worked tirelessly. Grateful wounded soldiers always spoke very warmly of the woman who helped them survive. According to available data, mortality during the war decreased tens of times! In addition to the usual medical care, Nightingale organized laundry and kitchens, created reading rooms and helped write letters to relatives. Before leaving for home, the nurse delivered a white marble cross to all medical workers who died in the Crimean War.

In England Florence Nightingale became the main army nurse. All the medical personnel received special training. Why is the day of the nurse celebrated on the birthday of Florence? It is thanks to her that medicine began to take more seriously the prevention of diseases, and if it was previously in the hands of surgeons, then since then the nurses have received new rights and recognition. Florence was the first medical worker who described the environmental impact on health, laying the foundations of ecology. Florence has a monument to Florence Nightingale. In addition, the name of this woman named the highest award, given annually to nurses around the world for more than a hundred years. The award is given annually on the Day of the Nurse, on May 12.

Today, many believe that a nurse is not very important, and the qualifications of such employees are being questioned. In fact, this opinion is erroneous. In the world there is a huge number of different organizations that are engaged in research and improvement of nursing. Currently, nurses are trained in a variety of educational institutions, and not for nothing, because a nurse is a person to whom patients are obliged to health and life. In different hospitals around the world, employees are happy and happy to celebrate the day of the nurse. The festival scenario can take a variety of forms, from conferences and gatherings to outdoor recreation or traveling abroad.
