North-West district - industrial, commercial and cultural center of Russia

Among all regions of the country, this area is known for the production of precision engineering products. It plays a significant role in the development of Russian science and technology, the main centers for the training of highly qualified specialists are concentrated here.

The North-West region is of great importance in the trade of Russia with other countries, thanks to the developed port economy. The main export-import operations are carried out through the Baltic Sea.

Natural potential

In this region of the country there is no special variety and richness of minerals. From large deposits can be identified reserves of bauxite, located near the city of Tikhvin. They are used as raw materials for the production of aluminum. In the Leningrad region there are significant reserves of phosphorites. But what is rich in the North-West region, so it's building materials: limestone, refractory clay, granite, glass sands.

An important role in the economy of the region is played by available forest resources, which are mainly located in the Novgorod and Leningrad regions. Northwest is well provided with water resources. There are such famous rivers as the Neva, Volkhov and others. There are several large lakes: Ladoga, Pskov and Ilmen.

Human Resources

Despite the fact that the North-West region occupies only 1% of the territory of Russia, it is home to almost 6% of the country's population. In the region, a high level of urbanization, the urban population is 87%. According to this indicator, this economic region is in the lead among the rest of the country. In its limits, a huge St. Petersburg agglomeration was formed, in which a large proportion of city residents live.

This part of the country is fully provided with highly skilled labor resources. The district is the second scientific base of Russia after Moscow.

Main branches of the economy

The North-West Economic Region has an advanced multi-sectoral complex that produces the most important types of products for the country's economy. In its structure, special mention should be made of engineering, light and chemical industries. Fuel and metallurgy are well developed.

Preference was given to shipbuilding, instrument making, electrical engineering, machine-tool construction, electronic industry, and the production of agricultural machinery. Most of the enterprises of these industries are concentrated in the Leningrad region and St. Petersburg.

The North-West region is famous for the production of rubber products, fertilizers, paint and varnish materials, chemical and pharmaceutical products. Production of synthetic resins and plastics has been achieved. The forest complex has developed well, with the pulp and paper industry and woodworking leading the way.

The North-West region of Russia has a well-developed transport system, thanks to which the region communicates with the West European sphere of the world market.
