Mosaic and Smalta, masters of the past and present

One and the same word can cause different associations in the imagination of people. What does the mosaic look like? What is it? Where did it come from in Russia?

For some, the mosaic is an excellent construction finishing material that has excellent physical characteristics. It is lined with rooms with high humidity: baths, swimming pools, bathrooms, kitchens, etc. For others, the mosaic is something sublime, artistic, creative. This is the material for expression itself. In essence, the mosaic is the same as the paint for the artist. Immediately recalled the Vatican Cathedral St.. Peter or St. Petersburg St. Isaac's Cathedral. There the art mosaic has reached its perfection!

Material for the creation of these masterpieces served as smalt. The beauty of this colored glass, do not convey the words, you must see! Smalta is cooked in ovens at high temperatures, due to which it is practically not subject to natural destruction. The technology of its manufacture in 16-17 centuries. It was kept secret by Italian craftsmen and was passed from rage to sorrow.

How did the mosaic appear in Russia? Who was the first to look at the beauty of smalt? He was a brilliant and versatile scientist Mikhail Lomonosov. During four difficult years, in continuous experiments, he found the secret to producing smalt in different shades. And he was ready to create mosaic panels. Sam Lomonosov believed that smalt is the best material to create a ceremonial mosaic portrait. In his studio, mosaic portraits of such famous people as Alexander Nevsky, Peter 1, Elizabeth Petrovna, PI Shuvalov, Catherine the second were created. The most famous and last work created with the participation of Lomonosov was the "Poltava Battle". Unfortunately after the death of Lomonosov, the laws he discovered were forgotten, the work was lost, the workshop and the factory were closed. And only in a hundred years the mosaic business in Russia will rise again! About the mosaic art will be remembered thanks to the architect Montferan who decided to translate the picturesque sketches into a mosaic for St. Isaac's Cathedral. Since there was no new Lomonosov at the time, Italian masters were invited. And they began to organize anew a mosaic workshop, a smalt factory, and prepare mosaic artists. Works will not be wasted. Russian mosaic is recognized in Europe! Italians will buy some shades of our smalt. In addition to the mosaics of St. Isaac's Cathedral, the mosaic workshop of the Academy of Fine Arts will carry out orders for churches, palaces and also make mosaic icons and portraits.

Further private mosaic workshops were created. One of them is associated with such a famous name Frolova. This is their mosaic workshop will win a tender for the mosaic decoration of the Church of the Savior on the Blood. There was a Soviet period of mosaic-monumental art.

And what happens to the artistic mosaic in our time? Who continues to create and create masterpieces from smalt? Could anyone, like Lomonosov, perform a ceremonial mosaic portrait, a mosaic panel?

There are not many such masters, but nevertheless they are. At least one name can be called boldly-Veronika Nedova, an artist-mosaicist. Works and manages in the mosaic and stained glass "EVA". With her works you can find here http://spb-eva.ru/index.php/home-3
