MAZ-509: brief description, interesting facts

As you know, any war sooner or later ends in peace. And therefore it is not surprising that the Soviet Union, which once defeated fascist Germany, began to actively rebuild the destroyed state property after the end of hostilities. It goes without saying that any construction requires special equipment. In this regard, a special burden was laid on the Minsk Automobile Plant, which started production of its own timber carrier. About him, we'll talk in this article, and we will learn, in particular, how much the frame weighs from MAZ-509.

Initially, the 500 series, to which this car belongs, was progressive and turned the consciousness of Soviet engineers and drivers to some extent. And all because the developers of the machine offered to place the motor directly under the cab, and not ahead of it, as it was before. Also, the cabin itself received the property of rollover, which made it possible to easily reach the main nodes of the MAZ-509. In addition, the lack of a hood made it possible to increase the length of the entire truck and increase its load capacity. Initially, this engineering proposal was met with hostility, but foreign experience has shown that such machines are viable, and therefore the technical commission approved the project.

Production start

On April 6, 1966, the assembly of the first MAZ-509P was started. This timber was produced, as they say, one by one and had certain shortcomings, which were quickly eliminated directly on ready-made machines.

Technical parameters of this truck had significant differences from those cars that the Minsk plant produced earlier. To begin with, the MAZ-509 bridges were all-wheel drive, and this unit was the only one that went into the series.

Decent change

The phased technical modernization of the machine led to the fact that she was able to go faster. The speed of the truck increased from 60 km / h to 65 km / h, which became possible due to a change in gear ratio gearbox. MAZ-509 differed from its ancestor and that it had a wider wheelbase, the size of which grew immediately by 10 centimeters. Also there was a two-disk clutch, and the load capacity increased (by half a ton). The front axle also underwent a change: it was fitted with conventional gearboxes instead of planetary ones.

Purpose

MAZ-509, the frame of which was characterized by increased rigidity, was designed and used to transport timber both on special roads and on gauge tracks. At the same time, he had the opportunity to enter logging. To ensure optimal conditions for loading / unloading the machine since 1969 began to be equipped with a winch, which has a swivel hinge and reclining racks. The horseman was able to withstand a load equal to 5500 kgf. The truck was equipped with a trailer-dissolution: ТМЗ-803М or ГБК-9383. These mechanisms had two axes and a self-winding device, which allowed, if necessary, to fold the trailer truck and load it onto the tractor. In those moments when the trolley was not operated and was loaded on the tractor, MAZ became biaxial. When there was a need for transportation of wood, the trailer was decomposed and the truck was transformed into a four-axle, both bridges being leading.

Features

MAZ-509 had a six-cylinder power unit (engine) with the arrangement of cylinders in the form of the letter V. There was also a water cooling system. The power of the engine was such that the timber carrier could be a truck tractor. There was a difference and transmission, which allowed to be an all-wheel drive car.

MAZ-509, the technical characteristics of which are given below, was quite a powerful timber carrier with a high degree of patency, which was explained by the need for its use in places far from man-made places that have a difficult terrain and weather conditions.

Interesting Facts

It should be noted that the MAZ-509 was repeatedly subjected to experiments. They were associated with the fact that it was based on the development of other all-wheel-drive vehicles. One such was the MAZ-509B dump truck, completely unified with the 509th model, as well as an army truck of the tilt type. However, none of the above options for some reason and did not enter mass production, even despite the fact that it fully met all the technical standards and requirements of the time.

In 1978, he got off the MAZ-509A assembly line, which differed from his predecessors only by external features, but by no means an internal filling. The production of this truck was completed almost at the same time as the collapse of the Soviet Union, but some cars are still very actively used up to this day.
