Mastic polymer-bitumen: features of modern materials

Bitumen is a derivative product obtained during the processing of oil. Irreplaceable material in many areas, but most often used for waterproofing construction sites, when laying and repairing roads. Compare it on the importance you can with materials such as rubber, glue or cement. Technical features of bitumen allow to work with it only while keeping it warmed up. This lack had to adapt up to the time when polymer-bitumen mastic appeared - a prototype of liquid rubber.

New possibilities of polymers

Polymeric materials have become a new stage in the development of many technologies and materials, and even industries. Acquiring a new formula, bitumen not only eliminated its shortcoming, but also improved the quality. The bitumen-polymer mastic used for waterproofing has now also been used for partial isolation from current, noise and temperature. New generation of bitumen has new technical capabilities:

  • Work with bitumen does not require preparation.
  • It does not require heating and working with fire, which, accordingly, reduces harmful working conditions.
  • Application in three ways.
  • Simplified maintenance of old bitumen.

Equally important are the qualitative indicators :

  • Fast curing.
  • Uniform drying without cracks and streaks.
  • Good fluidity and filling of small cracks.
  • Resistance to UV rays.
  • High plasticity (the higher the plasticity, the less the possibility of cracks, chips and depressurization).
  • Low bandwidth sounds and temperature.
  • The ability to apply to any texture and shape of any complexity evenly.

Technological features of use and storage

Modern polymer-bitumen mastic is produced with the addition of polymers, modifiers, artificial rubber, mineral fillers, solvents that support its pasty, i.e., operating state. The applied mastic does not require any preparation, except for mixing to obtain a uniform consistency. Preparation requires only the surface to be treated, which must be stripped of old materials and degreased.

Mastic can be applied to the surface in two ways: by spraying and by hand. For complex shapes and large areas, polymer-bitumen mastic is applied by special equipment under pressure without air. This makes it possible to obtain a seamless monolithic coating structure and ensure uniform drying. But if it is necessary to repair old bituminous coatings or to handle small areas, the polymer mastic can be applied to the surface with a brush or a rubber spatula.

Marking and symbols

Corresponds to bitumen-polymer mastic GOST, and also meets the requirements of international standards. According to GOST, it has its own marking, in which by means of abbreviation and digital signs significant characteristics and defining indicators are indicated:

  • Softening temperature.
  • Penetration is the penetration depth of a standard needle into a mass.
  • Ductility - the property of bitumen to stretch into the thread.

All oil-based mastics are marked with the first two letters BN. The third letter indicates the category in the direction of the types of work: K (roofing), D (road), AND (insulating). Further, the marking consists of their numerical designations of temperatures xx / xx. For each field of application, their indicators are used.

  • Road: BND xx / xx - the limits of change in penetration.
  • Roof: BHK xx / xx - the numerator indicates the softening point, and the denominator indicates the penetration temperature.
  • Isolation: BNI-IV or V.
  • Mastic bitumen roofing can be made with the addition of herbicides or antiseptics. The figure is the temperature of heat resistance for 5 hours, the next letter indicates the content of these elements: MBK-G-xx A.

Demanded bitumen for outdoor use

Types of bitumen, the most popular and often used in their categories, have an individual name, for example, "Slavyanka" or "Technonikol".

Bitumen-polymer mastic "Slavyanka" belongs to the category of insulating materials. It has proven itself to be universal for a wide range of applications, undemanding in preparation for work. One-component composition after opening is immediately applied to the cleaned surface. The setting time is 8-12 hours, after which the coating reliably protects against electrochemical effects of water in any state (atmospheric, capillary, ground, direct contact). The solidified monolith has a high coefficient of adhesion to surfaces: sand-concrete mixtures, metal structures, wood, asbestos-cement and silicate mixtures, as well as all derivatives of these materials. For hardening, the coating can be reinforced.

Use "Slavyanka" for domestic work is strictly prohibited!

Universal mark for internal works

Absolutely other purpose has bituminous-polymeric mastic "Technonikol". Made on a water basis, it is designed for indoor work. According to the principle of preparation for work and the method of application, mastic is also convenient and simple. One-component mixture does not require heating, if necessary diluted with water-emulsion primer and mixed until homogeneous consistency. It is used for roofing works, waterproofing of internal premises (bathrooms, pools, cellars, balconies, etc.). Also, to strengthen the layer, it can be reinforced.

Reinforcement of bitumen

To give greater strength, reinforcement of bitumen is used, especially for knots, bundles, conjugate contacting parts. For these purposes, a glass net of different diameter and caliber of cells is used. Its important feature is that the net is not a weaving, but a whole-piece construction. But reinforcement, increasing strength, reduces plasticity, and it should only be carried out in justified cases.

All polymer-bitumen mastic is made strictly in accordance with GOST. The product passes quality control at all stages of production and is provided by Russian and European (ISO) certificates.
