K. Balmont and Symbolism

The poet was born in an era called in the literature by the Silver Age. The tumult of currents and trends could not but inspire the young poet. From all directions, the closest Balmont was symbolism. It is in the key of symbolism that a poem is created, the analysis of which we will conduct.

An analysis of Balmont's poem "Reeds" will not be complete without knowledge of certain features of this trend in the literature.

The name "symbolism" comes from the French word. It was in France that this current began. Its distinctive features were the search for a special form, the expression of emotions by symbolic images. Poetry of this genre was supposed to glorify mystical spiritual impulses. Do not teach, but enthrall.

Amazing "Reeds". Plan for the analysis of the poem

Konstantin Balmont aspired to search for the ideal form in poetry. Analysis of the poem "Reeds" should be carried out taking into account this aspect, because in the form of symbolists saw no less, and even more meaning than in the content itself.

For a more coordinated analytical work, a short plan for the analysis of the poem is appropriate:

  1. Title and author of the work.
  2. Genre and literary trend.
  3. Subject.
  4. Idea and the main idea.
  5. Means of artistic expressiveness.

This plan is quite schematic. Nevertheless, the analysis of its formula will be clear and capacious.

Analysis of Balmont's poem "Reeds" according to plan

Let's start analyzing the poem. We will not repeat the name of the author and the title, we pass immediately to the second point.

The poem belongs to the literary flow of symbolism. Its genre contains elements of both landscape lyricism and philosophical.

The theme of the poem is the meaning of life. The idea - the transience of life, despair and powerlessness before fate. Thanks to the images of the swamp, wandering lights and the dying face of the moon, a rather gloomy picture is created by Balmont. An analysis of the poem "Reeds" should be supplemented by a study of means of artistic expressiveness. These colorful epithets are "wandering", "dying", "silent"; Personification (reeds whisper) and a special phonetic technique - alliteration. By repeating consonant sibilant sounds, the author achieves the effect of "rustling", which gives the poem a special sound.

In poetry there are comparisons, the month is compared with the dying "face", the noise of reeds - "with the sigh of a lost soul."

An interesting way to attract the attention of the reader is the reception, which is called "oxymoron". This combination is incongruous. In this case, this phrase "rustles noiselessly." Noiselessly that is without sound, but if they "rustle", it means that there is sound. This technique is used to create a mystical mood. Reeds do not whisper, but think. We hear not noise, but disembodied thoughts.

Balmont's poem "Reeds": a short analysis

The "reeds" were written by Balmont in the period of his soul throws, the search for the meaning of life and the ideal form of poetry. This could not but leave its imprint on the author's works. "Reeds" are filled with the feeling of inexorable fate, which, like a quagmire, sooner or later will tighten a lone wanderer into captivity.

The poem with a deceptively landscape name only begins with a description of the night river and reeds, the pale moon and visual night effects. The essence of it is quite different - behind the rustling of reeds hide the author's dumb questions: "Is there a meaning of life? What is it? Is it possible to achieve it? Why is this life so inexorably cut short? "

It was about the meaning of life that Balmont wrote this amazing work. Analysis of the poem "Reeds" should be done after the poem has been read aloud several times. This is necessary in order to hear how skillfully the poet uses alliteration - a special combination of sounds of a certain number. In this case, they are sibilant "w", "w", "h", "w". Thanks to them, the effect of artificial noise of reeds is achieved. Pay attention to the second line. In each of its words there is a sound "sh". This is the use of alliteration and the search for that very ideal form that would speak for the poet, complementing it.

Finally

The poetry of the Symbolists was created in order to surprise, make you think. Many did not understand and condemned the Symbolists, but this did not make their work worse. Konstantin Balmont also came under the hot hand of critics. Analysis of the poem "Reeds", his understanding was often subjective. They even tried to write parodies, they condemned him for decadent, decadent spirit. However, decades later, condemnation was forgotten, and the poem still does not leave even the most experienced reader indifferent.
