History of the holiday

The International Day of Happiness is a holiday that the UN General Assembly established to support the idea that the dream of happiness is common to all the inhabitants of the globe.

The date for the celebration was chosen not accidentally. March 20 comes the spring equinox, symbolizing the same right to happiness for all. Just as the day is equal to the night, one person is like the other. Therefore, all people are united in their desire to enjoy life. In order to remind about this, they created a day of happiness. Where to go for happiness?

Interestingly, the idea of celebrating the International Day of Happiness was put forth in the small Kingdom of Bhutan. And that's what it's connected with. The inhabitants of this state are recognized as leaders by the coefficient of Gross National Happiness. This is how the well-being of citizens is measured. It is interesting that the focus is not on material wealth, but on traditional spiritual values: family, health, nature, religion. This concept is based on Buddhist notions of happiness. It was introduced to the fourth king of Bhutan more than forty years ago, and since then it has been used in the country as an unofficial philosophical doctrine.

In addition, there is another way to determine the level of prosperity of the state - the international happiness index. It is used to reflect the state of the environment and measure the well-being of its inhabitants. According to the latest calculations, the most fortunate country was the Republic of Costa Rica.

Goals and objectives of the holiday

According to the organizers of the celebration, happiness is one of the most important goals of a person. And the Day of Happiness is a holiday that should remind everyone about this. In this regard, the UN calls on all states to do their utmost to improve well-being and satisfaction with the lives of each individual and the country as a whole. And first of all, to achieve a stable and balanced economic situation. This will improve people's well-being and reduce poverty. After all, only life in an economically developed country, where residents are financially protected and quietly build their future, can allow them to rejoice at every new day, to do good and to bring up truly happy children.

Also, according to the UN, social well-being and environmental protection throughout the world are indispensable components of human prosperity. However, one should remember this not only on the International Day of Happiness, but also all the year round.
