Film "Rage": review, reviews

One of the most discussed events of 2014 in the world of cinema is the release of the American action movie "Rage" on the big screens (the title in the original sounds like "Fury"), the main role in which went to Hollywood's most highly paid actor - Brad Pitt.

The plot of the film unfolds in the conditions of the Second World War. It is known that victory in it was hard for all countries that opposed Germany. That's why many critics and movie lovers were skeptical about the movie novelty in advance - they were afraid to see another blockbuster, according to the plot of which it turns out that only thanks to the heroism of a simple American guy, one of the most protracted and bloody wars was won. And on October 30 the premiere of the film "Rage" was held in Russia and Ukraine, the review of which was written by journalists almost the same evening (and not one). So, did the Americans succeed in breaking the stereotype or were the worst fears of the film fans justified?

Summary

"Rage" - a film, the action in which occurs just a few weeks before the capture of Berlin - in April 1945. Allied troops entered Germany, occupy the city outside the city. In the American tank unit is a certain Don Collier (Brad Pitt) in the rank of sergeant. Don fights far from the first day, the tank became for him literally the second house. The Collier's crew is one of the few who managed to get out of all the trouble without losing their personnel.

However, in one of the battles, the machine-gunner dies, and Norman Ellison (Logan Lerman) - a young man who never held arms in his hands, let alone shot at people - takes his place. The crew of the Don immediately gets a rather dangerous task, but Collier has real fears that, because of the infantilism of the recruit, the commander will not be able to save his combat comrades, and most importantly - to fulfill the task.

In the first skirmish, due to Norman's fault, who refused to shoot at the Germans, one of the unit's crews was killed. Don Collier forcibly forces Ellison to kill a person (a prisoner of war) for the first time in his life, after which he "enters into the taste" and begins to perform his duties properly.

In one of the German cities, Norman meets the German girl Emma (Alicia von Rittberg) and becomes attached to her, but the bombs dropped by the German fighters for the allied forces fall into the apartment building, and Emma dies before his eyes.

The tank unit, led by Collier, advances to the next city for reinforcements to the allied forces, but the armored fascist tank "Tiger" destroys it - only the crew of the Don can survive. Don, Boyd (Shia LaBeouf), Norman, Grady (John Berntal) and Trini (Michael Peña) are moving to the road fork to unite there with their troops, as it provided for the previously assigned combat mission, but stumble upon the mine - the tank breaks down . The crew can not fix it, because after a while the SS battalion approaches the place where they are stuck.

5 members of the team engage in battle, knowing that they will die. Don's children managed to destroy a large number of SS soldiers, but the combat stocks soon come to an end, and the tankmen die one after another. Norman is the only one who managed to escape: the Allied troops find him near the destroyed tank and the bodies of lost friends the next morning.

Cast

Review of the movie "Fury" can not leave without attention an interesting selection of actors for the project. In fact, the director David Ayer used the old Hollywood technique: there is only one really venerable star (Brad Pitt) in the picture, which "shines" against the background of the overwhelming majority of little-known names.

Of course, there is also Shia LaBeouf and Logan Lerman. However, LaBeouf, known all over the sensational "Transformers" franchise, plays the role of patient and meek Svyatoshi in "Rage", which sometimes even in the frame is not discernible (but this in no way detracts from the actor's talent). And the rising star Lerman by definition can not compete for the viewer's attention with the "experienced" Pitt. Proceeding from this, critics dubbed the film "Brad Pitt's film," which, perhaps, for the better, since nothing distracted attention from the character of the actor and his talented play.

In addition, the roles of the second plan were played by John Bernthal (the role of the loader in the crew) and Michael Peña (the role of driver-mechanic). The most successful work of John Berntal - participation in t / s "Walking Dead" and the / c "Wolf from Wall Street". Michael Peña starred in many famous projects, but played, as a rule, secondary roles ("Twin Towers", "The Scam in American").

The fighting comrades of the crew of Don Collier were little- known actors Jim Parrak, Kevin Vance, Lawrence Spellman and Daniel Betts. Episodic roles went to Scott Eastwood (the son of the famous film director), Jason Isaacs (played the role of Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter series), Xavier Samuel ("Twilight, Eclipse," "Light me") and Brad Hanke ("The Bridge" / F "Day of Draft").

The roles of German girls in the captured city went to Alicia von Rittberg (the star of German TV series), Anamaria Marinka (Romanian actress) and some Evgeniya Kuzmina, the wife of Bill Blok (the producer of the picture).

Brad Pitt in the role of Combat Dad

If it were not for Pitt's participation in the movie "Rage", the review of many critics' films was hardly so positive. The film was filmed in the style of a realistic chronicle, and if its cast was not decorated with a really interesting creative personality, then half the audience would have given up the dry details of military life.

Brad Pitt began his career as a hero of melodramas: attractive appearance made directors see him as only a hero-lover. But over time, the actor showed everyone that he is not so simple.

The turning point in his creative career is the main role in David Fincher's Fight Club: no romance, no softness, no emphasis on appearance - Pitt has proved that it can be tough, which can be cynical, which can be different. Then his roles become more diverse and interesting.

As for "Fury", the character Pitt nicknamed Battle Dad is simple and understandable: this is a man who is well versed in his business and does not clog his head with idealistic nonsense. Don Collier knows only one thing: he is at war, he is the boss, and if he hesitates even for a second, then not only him, but his crew will be killed. Like any good military man, Don got used to follow orders, so when he loses his unit and even a combat vehicle, he still tries to keep his assigned positions and as a result dies.

Logan Lerman

Logan Lerman played one of the key roles in the film "Rage". The review of journalists did not pass over to his person.

Lerman, unlike Pitt, was not filmed before in military films. Maybe that's why it was easy for Logan to get used to the role of the young Norman Ellison - the new gunner-radio operator in the Battle Daddy's crew. The character of Lerman brings a conflict in the development of the plot, since in the company of professional military men he is clearly a weak spot - afraid of blood, never killed, lightly falls in love with girls.

The crew members of the Sherman tank are afraid that it is Norman that will cause them to not reach the end of the war. But under the pressure of circumstances, the character of Lerman changes, as a result, he alone remains alive after the final battle.

Shia LaBeouf and his character Svyatosha

The review of the movie "Rage" from many film critics was not without a positive evaluation of the sudden reincarnation of Shai LaBeouf: the young actor filled up his coin box with another characteristic character - Boyd Swan (tank-gunner's technique).

Boyd is a deeply religious person, constantly citing Holy Scripture, for which he received the nickname of Svyatosh. Boyd Swan himself understands that he "got everyone out with his sermons", but as a loyal companion, he still enjoys respect from the crew members. During the final battle, one of the first dies.

Director and other creators of the tape

"Rage" is a film by David Eyer. The American director personally wrote the script and even acted as a producer.

This is not Ayer's first experience in working on military dramas: he wrote scripts for such films as "Yu-571" and "Training Day." Also Ayer - the author of the script for the first part of the franchise "Fast and the Furious". Eyer's desire to touch upon a military topic in his works is understandable: he served in the US Navy and knows military history firsthand.

In the drama "Fury", David Eyer managed to move away from politics, as well as idealizing the war. Without assessing what is happening, the director simply shows the chronicle of the life of tankmen of the Second World War, his characters are endowed with the most controversial features and ordinary human fears. These are not comic book characters and the usual action games - these are ordinary servicemen who simply do their work.

Any written review of the movie "Fury" does not ignore the talented camera work of Roman Vasyanov, a graduate of the Moscow VGIK. Vasyanov worked as a cameraman in the project of V. Todorovsky "Tiski" and A. Kavun "Piranha Hunting". In Rage, the operator helped David Ayer create the most realistic atmosphere by shooting the material in such a way that the viewer has the effect of being present on the battlefield or in the tank.

The producers of the picture were Bill Block ("District No. 9", "Vanilla Sky") and John Loescher ("Patrol"), Steven Price ("Gravitation") worked on the musical accompaniment.

Interesting Facts

Work on a historical drama is not an easy matter (it was in this genre that "Rage" was removed). The review of the film (the facts of the mistakes made are obvious) necessarily refers to the shortcomings and oversights of the crew. Some of them are visible even to the unsophisticated viewer.

  1. During the denouement of the battle in the tank of Don Collier 2 grenades are thrown, an explosion occurs. But when Norman returns to the tank in the morning, it is clearly visible that the dead commander is in perfect condition with uniform and skin.
  2. Shortly before the end of the film, Norman sits in an ambulance and watches from the inside as soldiers of the Allied troops fuss around the tank - the car's glass is so dirty and cloudy that it's practically invisible. However, when the operator removes from the outside, it looks clean and clearly shows the viewer's face to the actor.
  3. The final battle begins in the afternoon, but after a few minutes the scene comes a deep night.

There are a few more films, which can be seen only by people who are versed in military affairs. But in general and in general, the realistic situation was recreated. To this end, the performers of the main roles were trained by a professional tankman, and a tank M4A2 76mm HVSS was specially fitted into the set from the Bovington Museum, which was not replaced with a single screw since the Second World War.

The director insisted that the actors really feel the "dirt, sweat, blood and tears" of the war. Shia LaBeouf, for example, regarded this literally and practically did not wash during filming.

Premiere

On the big screens the picture came out in the fall of 2014. For the film "Fury" the schedule (a review from local journalists came out right after viewing) the premiere looked something like this:

  • October 17 - The Bahamas, Canada;
  • October 19 - Great Britain;

Ratings

Considering the reviews compiled for "Rage" (film reviews largely affect the ratings), we can say that the world rating of the film approached 78%. In Russia, the picture has won 71% of positive reviews. The rating of "Fury" according to IMDb version is also quite high - 7.65.

Reviews and reviews of the film "Rage"

Film critics and viewers in general were grateful to the director for the absence in the film of politically controversial moments and a democratic approach to presenting the facts. Also fans of military films highly appreciated the realistic nature of filming and attentive approach to technical details.

The plot review of the film "Fury" showed that everything in it develops quite logically and naturally, except for the finale. Spectators note that the director still could not resist and turned the storm of the immobilized tank literally in fantasy: the Germans until the morning can not get close to Don Collier, which on the roof of the tank can be seen as in the palm of your hand. What is even more surprising - a German sniper for some reason waits until all his comrades are killed, and only then begins to perform their duties. In a word, more demanding viewers dubbed the picture "a comedy of blunders".

Conclusion

In view of the complexity of the genre in which the film "Rage" is shot, the review and reviews on it can not be unambiguous. But the thoroughness with which the film crew was preparing for the release of the film, the director's sincere desire to achieve high realism, as well as large box-office gatherings, are undoubtedly the occasion for viewing the tape.
