The malamute dog belongs to the oldest Arctic driving breed. It got its name from the Alaskan male tribe, which settled along the shore of the Kotzebue Channel in the west of Alaska.

The Malamutes were an industrious and cheerful tribe. Their well-groomed and strong dogs had thick wool with a thick undercoat, standing sharp ears, luxurious fluffy tails. They were draft dogs, harness dogs. Their endurance people skillfully used - as draft power in fast and powerful teams, in addition, if necessary, they helped a man to drag heavy boats.

At the beginning of the last century, when Alaska was seized with a gold rush, the malamute dog was very much in demand. Thousands of gold diggers rushed to the peninsula. Many of them died on the way. Only those who used the dog sled have achieved success. Gold seekers sought to bring the fastest dog to the harness and crossed various dogs (malamutes including). Such activities did not benefit the breed.

Specialists rightly believe that the period from 1909 to 1918 was the decline of the breed. Over time, the passion for mining gave way to sporting excitement, and Americans took a great interest in toboggan racing. Quite unexpectedly it saved the breed - for the race it was not a pack of random mestizas, but purebred and thoroughbred animals.

In 1926, the breeding of malamutes began. In the year one thousand nine hundred and thirty-five, the breed received official recognition. A mandatory standard was published and a breed club was organized. The malamute dog began to be divided into two distinct groups - Kotzebue - low animals with beautiful heads, having wolfish color, and "Mlut" - dogs of large, very different colors.

During the war and numerous Arctic expeditions, the man cruelly dealt with his faithful assistants - often cases when animals were simply thrown in the cold, dooming them to agonizing death from hunger. By 1947 the breed had only 30 (!) Surviving Alaskan malamutes.

In the second half of the twentieth century, the malamute dog came to Europe. Today it occupies an honorable place in the top thirty of the most popular and popular breeds.

Malamute is a very friendly animal. Likes to be in the spotlight. Better feels surrounded by family than alone. Very clever, but at the same time can be very stubborn. Has a strong character, which allows it to dominate many other, no less powerful dogs, so it is often aggressive to relatives.
